If you can only buy one SNP hiking book, get this one!, January 17, 2009
This review is from: Appalachian Trail Guide to Shenandoah National Park (Paperback) (Paperback)
I can't believe no one else has rated this book (yet)! But then again I think maybe it's one of the park bookstore's best-kept secrets. This tiny book, small enough to fit into a backpack, lists the names, mileage and features (such as terrain and water sources) of all the trails in the park.
If you're planning a circuit hike, this book allows you to easily estimate mileage for the whole trip, since the book gives mileage and terrain information on even the shortest side trail. Best of all, it guides you along on each trail - telling you, for example, how far you've traveled (and how far you have to go) once you get to a certain junction.
This amazing litle guide is sooo thorough that you'll find trails not mentioned in any of the other hiking books about the park. Those trail names are easily located in the book's index.
I've gotten a lot of use out of this book. Whether you're a day-hiker or a thru-hiker, I'm thinking you will, too!
