Grade 3-7 Patent covers Appaloosa history, color patterns, and breed association. From the general, she moves to specifics about Appaloosa purchase and uses. The straightforward information will appeal to both knowledgeable and novice riders, as Patent defines terms and provides pronunciations in context. Of the 57 black-and-white photographs, most adequately illustrate the subjects. Others range from outstanding to "grab shots." Two photos portray potentially-dangerous situations: a Western Pleasure entrant rides in a ring set up for pole-bending, and a horse on the hot walker steps over its trailing lead rope. The book's few drawbacks shouldn't detract from its appeal to recreational readers and report writers. A source list and an index add to its value. Every since I was a child I've loved nature and animals. I spent my time out of doors, picking flowers and scooping tadpoles out of ponds. So it's no wonder I studied biology and became an author myself of a favorite gift when I was young, a book about nature.
