At first I was a little put off by the sonics of this disc. The acoustic guitar sound was a little distant or compressed sounding. The mastering of the disc also seems a little low on volume and the eq is not idea.

BUT after repeated listens I definitely feel that this is one of Joe's best records from his last period. Of course, nothing can touch his early records but there also really is no such thing as a bad Joe Pass record.

This recording puts Joe in the midst of 3 sympathetic musicians (the same group that did the great For Django recording 27 years prior). The solos uncover some new gems with each listening. In the end the quality of the music trumps the rather lacklutster sound quality. Anyone who loves Joe Pass will be happy with this disc.

For jazz fans and guitarists this should be required listening. Joe Pass illustrates the art of jazz guitar in fine textures and very listenable style. Guitarists are taken to school and shown how sweet and melodic the instrument was designed to be.

This is an outstanding recording. The selection of songs on here is simply great and has widened my music horizons. (If I hadn't heard Grooveyard, I never would have found out about Carl Perkins.) I know a lot of people think that Joe Pass is kind of a guitar geek thing, but he's an outstanding musician. "Relaxin at Camarillo" is a great "breezy" opener, and it just gets better from there. "When it's sleepy time..", "Stuffy", "Nica's Dream" all incredibly well executed. I never tire of this recording. Joe Pass in usual great form, making it look easy.
