This is probably the definitive biography of Julia Child. I have always known about Julia Child but went for decades without paying much attention to this extraordinary woman's life. When I finally began to get serious about cooking, I connected. Not only - per my family's feedback - have my culinary skills taken a giant leap forward, but I also found in Julia an awesome role model. It's all there: the story of a great marriage, of a woman who found her calling late in life, who "did it her way" (which was a very civilized and advanced way, I must say) and succeeded in building an extraordary career and in advancing the way a whole country approached dining. Julia made it not only okay, but "the thing to do," to strive for pleasurable dining experiences - dining experiences raised to the level of art - versus simply aiming to put three squares on the table.

Along with all of this, Julia models a way to live - with a great sense of humor, gusto, fearlessness and joy. What's not to like? Noel Riley Fitch does a great job of capturing Julia and of sharing this great personality with us. As Julia might say, Bien fait! (Well done!)

I bought this book after seeing the movie Julie and Julia a couple of weeks ago. I really didn't know much about Julia and Paul Child - who were indeed a team as this bio points out - until reading Fitch's book. Her writing is excellent, and I'd rather know too much than too little about a subject. I just cannot understand any of the bad reviews of this book that have been written.

I have also read "Julie and Julia", which I didn't quite care for. I still have the third book, Julia Child's own "My Life in France" next up on my reading table. But to get back to Fitch's book, which ends before Child's death in 2004, it is a complete biography of all of Child's life up to the point it was written. Fitch incorporates most of Julia'a (and Paul's) family and friends and makes special mention of their WW2 duties in the OSS in Ceylon and China. Most of all, the reader can "see" how Julia McWilliams and Paul Child fell in love and created "Julia Child".

Fitch's work is a good addendum to the movie Julie and Julia.

She was such a talented and wonderful person. I love to read about her and Paul. So sad that he became ill and died so much before her. They were truly a great pair

This is a BIG book crammed with information. I have been reading alot about Julia Child lately, but this is probably the LAST one I will have to read. The author has the book sectioned in readable sections within each chapter, so picking up where you left off is easy. There are actual quotes from the author's interviews with friends and family. Julia's husband Paul's thoughts are documented also especially through the letters to his twin brother. As we approach the anniversary of her 100th birthday, "Appetite for Life" is the definative work on Julia Child.

When Julia Child sprang on the American culinary scene in 1963, there really was no American culinary scene- at least, not like their is today. Here was somewhat gawky but terribly charming midle-aged woman who was going to teach us all about this fancy French cooking. Many watched her as much for the entertainment of seeing her run about a tiny public television set, waiting for her to drop something, or for a souffle' to fall, or some other (rare) cooking disaster. The shows were filmed in one continuous take, with no editing, and it's amazing they went as well as they did. But soon housewives across America were hooked. My mother and her friends were soon talking about this wonderful new show and trading stories of their success (or failure) in making Potage Parmentier or Oeufs en Meurette.

Over the next thirty four years Julia Child alternately led and rode the new wave of interest and food that took Americans from macaroni and cheese and soda pop to pate de fois gras and Merlot. By the time of her passing in 2004, she had become the Grande Dame of American cooking, an iconic figure whom everyone with a cooking show deferred to and acknowledged as the pioneer who made their show possible. But we, the television viewing public, had only seen thirty-some years of her 91 year life. Her own autobiographical My Life in France (Movie Tie-In Edition) (Random House Movie Tie-In Books) filled in some of the holes, but left a lot of questions unanswered. This book and the similar
