The quality of this UKE is as good as any Applause guitar, which for the money is very good. The build quality is excellent, and once the strings are worn in, they hold their tune much better than any cheap UKE. If you enjoy the UKE, it's well worth the price for this model. The tonal quality is crisp and clear, but not quite the warm sound one hears from a wooden UKE. Now, if only my fingers could play it better...

Really solid-feeling, nice sounding uke,

I've got a few ukuleles, and really enjoy play this Applause uke. The solid mahogoany top gives it a brightness and pretty good volume. The neck is slim and comfortable to play. The whole instrument feels very solid. The stock strings are D'Addario J26 (I think), and they work well for the instrument. I'd imagine that a switch out to Martins, Worths, or Aquilas would only improve the sound (if you were unhappy with it). Just remember: nylon or flourocarbon strings require a settling in period; they need to stretch to retain their tuning. Tune your strings, play, re-tune, etc. After a week or so, they should stay in tune fairly consistently. The enclosed geared tuners are very smooth and feel of high quality. The uke looks pretty 'plain jane' in the pics, but in person, it is an attractive instrument. Different ukuleles have different tonal and volume characteristics. Overall, of the ones I own, this one is favorable, and comfortable to hold and play. To me, it just feels good playing it. There are other models that have electronics on board, but I just strum for fun, so this simple uke was perfect.

This is a great little Uke. My daughter thought she needed it for school but they cancelled the program. Several years later (the present) she picked it up and started learning it on her own. She can make it sound like a Jew's harp.A very sturdy yet nice sounding combination of wood and plastic. This is the kind of instrument that gets carried around alot and banged around - so that's good. |
