Product Description

While everyone else was busy trying to keep up with iPhone, Apple were busy creating amazing new features that make iPhone more powerful, easier to use, and more indispensable than ever. The result is iPhone 4. The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone. All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass - the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It's also recyclable.

UPDATE!
Since the time of my original review two exciting things have happened to the iPhone 4:

(1) Apple has introduced the iPhone 4 for Verizon who have a reputation for dropping fewer calls than AT&T. Verizon also differs from AT&T in that you cannot use both data and voice simultaneously on their CDMA network. But would you need to? Also they are currently offering better plan options than AT&T such as unlimited 3G data for $30/mo for existing VZ customers and new switchers. This may be a limited-time promotion though!

(2) GreenPois0n released a JailBreak for iOS 4.2.1. That means now you can get HDR photography and AirPlay features on a jailbroken and/or unlocked iPhone! It means you don't need to buy an old used iPhone 4 running 4.0 in order to modify it. More options for more people in more places.

Please consider these new developments when reading my original review below.

This is the best mobile phone I have ever owned. I held off on buying the iPhone for the first three generations because it is locked to AT&T in the USA and you can only acquire apps through Apple's proprietary App Store. This sort of closed platform was a real put-off to me (and still is), but when it came time to buy a new mobile phone (my old one was dying) I knew there was only one choice. So I bit the bullet and got an iPhone 4.

It's damn near perfect. I can't speak for the small percentage of users having the infamous antenna problem because it has not affected me, and I strongly suspect the press is blowing that issue out of proportion to drive traffic to their websites or whatever. Don't pay too much attention to that though because even the best technology is still not perfect.

6/11/11 I'm on my second week of OS 5, and this should effectively kill all the silly complaining by Droid fanboys. A night and day improvement, and not much need to jailbreak your phone anymore. All the details are on Apple's website, and according to most sources this new OS will be available to the general public this fall.

Below is my original review:

I had the 8GB 3G model and thought that was great, until I got a demo of the iPhone 4. Man is this version is light years ahead of the original model.

With a 1Ghz CPU, and 16GB of flash memory, this thing is a portable office/entertainment center par excellence. I've had this phone for 3 months without a single problem, the display is nice and sharp, the apps load very fast, and I now have over 130 apps to perform just about every duty you could possibly think of with absolutely no impact on performance. And on the ATT 3G network, I average download speeds of around 1.8Mbps, and over 1M upload speeds....and how do I know that, cause I got an app that tells me that's how. BTW, the display is the equivalent of a 960x640 on your desktop so what you see is essentially a high res yield and page loads are superfast. And resident memory, after a full days use I just checked and still had 120Mb of Ram available. On the 3G model that number was usually down around 4Mb by the end of the work day and had to be refreshed.

Even the battery life is 3x better than the previous model, and thats a good thing cause its integrated but a full charge should yield and entire days work of calls, emails, surfing the web, SMS messaging, and play. I no longer need my laptop cause there's nothing I cant do with the iPhone, and that includes sending faxes, editing Excel or Word documents, and even printing.

Verified Purchase
On April 17, I purchased an iPhone 4 advertised as unlock from PCM on the Amazon website. When it arrived on April 22, it was not unlocked. There is a hardware device (gevey) that allegedly unlocks the iPhone 4. Following the instruction attached in the packing list is very problematic because it instructs the user to dial the international emergency number "112" (which is 911 in the US) and then hang up after 2 seconds when a connection is established (basically hang up when the 911 operator answers). It is illegal in many municipalities ( counties, cities, etc) to dial 911 without having an emergency. Do not be surprised if the local law enforcement appears at your door or you get a court summon. Maybe outside of the US this a good hardware device to unlock an iPhone 4 but not within the US. Adding insult to injury, PCM does not accept returns for its iPhone 4. All retailers are required to know the local laws and not sell merchandise that is illegal or unlawful in a local market place. PCM is located in Florida and there is no excuse for ignorance of US laws, especially if a company considers itself to have moral and ethical integrity.
I want to emphasize that I was expecting an iPhone 4 unlocked from the manufacture not a 3rd party hardware unlock device, which is essentially a hack. In my opinion, this is misleading advertisement and Amazon has a moral and ethical obligation to its customers to verify that merchant using Amazon's service are not violating US laws or misleading their customer. I purchased this iPhone4 advertised on Amazon and order fulfilled by Amazon because I trust Amazon period.
Amazon needs to protect its brand because good branding is priceless but no name merchants are here today and gone tomorrow.

In 20/20 hind sight, it would have been more prudent to wait until there is a more effective and less problematic way to unlock an iPhone 4.
