Customer Questions & Answers

No, Apple should have a VESA mount "ability" built-in, out of the box with their expensive monitors.

When I got item and opened it up, the box said it only fits certain model year 27" Imacs and the new version which I have was not included.

This thing takes a lot of work to get on and off, but if you need to VESA mount your device, it'll get the job done.

I bought this for my new model 27 in. Imac, the description said it fits 27 in. Imac and thunderbolt. When I got item and opened it up, the box said it only fits certain model year 27" Imacs and the new version which I have was not included. I contacted the seller (Data Vision) and explained the problem, the guy was a total jag and said I should have checked to be sure it will fit before I buy. I told him the description said it will fit, and again he said they sell 1000's of items and can't be sure what fits what and that I should have called the manufacturer before buying. He said I could return it but I have to pay shipping. I asked why since it was due to their wrong description, and was told again that I should have checked first before buying and that they won't pay for return shipping. And this was supposedly a manager of the place. They only want your sale and don't care after that. Never buy from Data Vision!!!

I would have given it 5 stars had I not had so much trouble getting it on.

Works as described and holds tight.

Advice: The instructions say to tilt your iMac forward on the stand for removal, but I found it easier when I tilted it back, inserted the card, and then tilted it forward.

Also, you really have to have the top screw on tight to get the side screws to line up. A little tricky at first, but it's to ensure that it stays on!

The directions could have been a little clearer, but it does the job!

This device is well machined and is a great product.

When used with an iMac, you need to be particularly attentive to removing the stand. The kit comes with a credit card like device to "unlock" the stand, then lean the stand forward to reveal the screws attaching the stand to the mount on the iMac. You can lock/unlock the stand all you like, but you have to be very careful to make sure the stand is unlocked and latched in place before you remove the screws. Otherwise, the holder/screws will disappear back inside the iMac holder and it is exceptionally hard to "unlock" that component again...you'll need to fish it out with the credit card unlocked, and some sort of metal hook or... to fish it out. IT IS NOT EASY. It can be done, but it is not easy.

IF you have problems, you can fish around trying to release the stand again without worries about damaging internal components - apparently that stand is self enclosed (per tech support) so you're safe to go about hunting for the release mechanism.

So best to make sure the stand is locked in place when you go about removing the screws on the stand.

Update - 5 March 2013

As a follow up, I wanted to add that I was told by tech support that the iMac stand holder (the piece that pivots from inside the iMac cavity on the back where the stand attaches) can be gotten out with some work. I however have had no such luck after a couple weeks and will be taking my much abused iMac to have it professionally extracted.

I was able to get it to pivot just to the opening, but the spring on the holder is very strong. I found that a radiator hose pick works well to manipulate that holder btw if you're have/need to give it a try.

I purchased two Apple Vesa to mount my thunderbolt Imac 2012 (new) along side my thunderbolt video display. Little did I know that, after taking everything out of the boxes and actually trying to remove the bases... well the video display (secondary display) worked fine since the casing was of the former type. But the new iMacs are not Vesa compliant!!!!!! No one tells you these things until you have spent 45 minutes trying to follow instructions, then you find on some blog the unfortunate whine of someone who had previously tried, and failed to do what you are attempting to do... and now it's confirmed and what do you do with this adapter when you had to tear up the box to get it opened?

Fist I have to admit being biased a little with the idea I have to pay just to put four screws in the back of my late 2009 iMac... With that said this kit couldn't be designed more poorly from an ease of installation perspective! Also the mount blocks part of the fan inlet.

For those two reasons I took two stars.

The good:
It does actually work

The bad:
There are only three screws yet the designer saw fit to turn three screws into two different screw heads, one a torx and the other an allen. Why two and why not phillips I can't say. I can say that the engineers decided to make the screws out of aluminum so I ended up ruining one of the allen heads when I tried to tighten the screw. Being not ferrous also makes it hard to use my nice magnetic phillips driver had they been phillips headed screws.

In total it took me about 40 minutes to install. Not too bad but considering the actual mount took me less time I think it's evident you must be a patient person to install what amounts to three screws.

Tips:
During install be gentle with the screws. They are hard to line up to start the threads, don't worry about the threads, it's the allen head you want to be careful of. If you have a sensitive significant other then you'll want to wait till they aren't home because you will be cursing.

Bottom line is, would I buy it again. As I know of no other solution to mount an iMac on the wall I am forced to answer yes.
