Product Description

With the Apple Time Capsule, you'll be able to give your computer automatic, constant protection over a blazing-fast, secure wireless connection. Time Capsule includes a wireless hard drive designed to work with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard or later. Just set Time Capsule as the designated backup drive for Time Machine, and that's it.

Time Capsule
One-click continuous backup for your Mac using Time Machine.

Multiple Macs
Works with multiple Macs.

This 4th generation version of Time Capsule features a 3 TB hard drive. It also operates in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously to ensure top performance for all your devices, and it provides a Guest Networking option for easy Internet sharing. You'll be able to share your entire wireless network with up to 50 users at the same time as well as turn a USB hard drive into a shared drive that's accessible wirelessly on your network and now over the Internet.

One-Click Continuous Backup

Time Capsule is your one place for backing up everything. Its massive 3 TB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need. So whether you have 250 songs or 250,000 songs to back up, you won't run out of room.

Depending on how much data you have, your initial backup with Time Capsule could take overnight or longer. After it completes, only changed files are backed up--automatically, wirelessly, and in the background--you'll never have to worry about backing up again. And new technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule even faster than before.

If you have multiple Mac computers in your house, Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Mac running Mac OS X Leopard or later on your wireless network--no need to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up.

Mac + PC

Works with Mac and PC

Time Capsule with Time Machine in Mac OS X Leopard or later is the ideal backup solution. But that doesn't mean Mac OS X Tiger, Windows XP, and Windows Vista users can't enjoy the benefits of Time Capsule, too. Because Time Capsule mounts as a wireless hard drive, Tiger and Windows users simply access Time Capsule directly from the wireless network for exchanging and storing files quickly and easily.

Simultaneous Wireless-N Dual-Band Support

The Apple Time Capsule is based on the Wireless-N (IEEE 802.11n) specification and it uses multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) to transmit multiple data streams simultaneously--resulting in data transfer speeds up to five times those of 802.11g wireless networks while also providing up to twice the range. It's compatible with Mac computers, PCs, and wireless devices such as iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch that use 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g technologies.

Additionally, some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4 GHz wireless band (such as the iPhone, iPod touch, and other devices using 802.11b/g). And other devices can use both the 2.4 GHz spectrum as well as the higher speed 5 GHz spectrum--such as 802.11n-based Mac computers and Apple TV.

Time Capsule operates simultaneously on both bands, without you having to choose one spectrum over the other--enabling your Wi-Fi devices to receive optimal performance in speed and range. Plus, devices that can connect to Time Capsule on either band will automatically use the best available band.

Wireless printing
Share a printer with your networked Macs and PCs.

Gigabit Ethernet

In addition to Wi-Fi networking, Time Capsule includes three Gigabit Ethernet ports for fast wired connectivity with desktop computers, network drives, and more.

Guest Networking Capabilities

Allow guests to use your Internet connection without sharing your password or giving them access to the rest of your network. Simply enable the guest networking feature using the AirPort Utility application and create a separate Wi-Fi network just for your friends. You can set up this guest network with a different password or with none at all. Your primary network--including your printer, attached drives, or other devices--remains secure.

Wireless Printing

With its wireless printing capabilities, you can plug a printer into Time Capsule, add it to the printer list on your Mac or PC, and start printing--all without a cable tethered to a computer. Time Capsule uses the Mac- and PC-compatible Bonjour networking technology to let everyone on the network take advantage of one centrally available printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars My only regret is not getting this sooner February 4, 2012
By lnferno
One of the best purchases I've made in a while is my new Apple Time Capsule. After using this thing for a couple of hours, I regret not getting it sooner. I've had Century Link's 40 Mbps Internet for a few months now. The devices that I had plugged into my Actiontec Q1000 router were able to take advantage of those speeds. I had DirecTV, AppleTV, and I ran a 50ft Cat6 ethernet cable to a convenient location if I ever wanted/needed to be hard-lined in, but my wireless devices (iPad, laptops) were only able to get between 12-18 Mbps speeds. Respectable, but not really taking advantage of the high-speeds that have been paying for. My wireless home security cameras have always had about a 3 second delay when viewing them on my iPad. Now, with the Time Capsule, having the ability to use the 5GHz band, those devices are now realizing the same speeds as if they were hard-lined in with ethernet!

I originally bought this device for network storage for my MacBook Air backups and as a general use wireless file system. Time Machine on my Mac coupled with Time Capsule really provides for such a seamless and transparent backup solution -- A lot more elegant than what I did with creating my own crude batch files with 7zip and Windows Scheduler on my old Windows laptop.

I also really like the ability to create a guest network on the fly so that guests can take advantage of my home network speeds, but I don't have to compromise my home's network security.

If anyone is considering getting an Apple Time Capsule -- DO IT -- you will be very glad you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very glad I decided to buy Time Capsule January 4, 2012

I considered Time Capsule a couple years ago when I needed a new router to replace an Airport Extreme zapped by lightning. I just didn't want to spend the extra money, and so I got a new AEBS. When looking for a new backup strategy last month, I read the reviews here and decided to get the Time Capsule for the wireless capability. I had tried to use Time Machine with a 2T My Book drive networked via the AEBS. It didn't work. Now I'm backing up my husband's MacBook Pro, my iMac and my external video drive all via WIFI in the background. If you love the ease of use of Time Machine, it's even better using Time Capsule. Setup took 5 minutes and my settings were automatically transferred to the TC. Now my AEBS is working as an extender on the network in a hard to reach part of the house and I will have a backup router if lightning strikes again.

5.0 out of 5 stars It just works! December 1, 2012
I bought this from Apple store during black Friday to replace CISCO WRT310N. Like most of the Apple products, simplicity applies to its installation/configuration process and its use. Time machine setup is no brainer, and it is nice to have an additional guest network for internet only access. So far the WI-FI has been very fast and stable. Great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars APPLE TIME CAPSULE March 15, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is my second Apple Time Capsule that I bought to back-up a MACBOOK PRO and an IMAC. My original 500 gb Time Capsule that I bought in 2008 is still operational and I have depended on it heavily. When my 2007 IMACs hard drive reached the end of its life, recently, I replaced it and restored the system and my files in less than two hours . . . far cry, time wise, from a windows machine. I have been very impressed with the back-up features and router capabilities of the time capsule. I can easily say I have gone back at-least 15 times to recover files that I accidentally deleted, goofed, or overwrote, sometimes, these files were several years old. Although I no longer use it as my primary router, it worked well and was a very flexible with respect to configuration when I did. Albeit these devices are pricey, they are simple, reliable, predictable and dependable. When my 2008 time capsule begins to reach the end of its service life in the next year to year and a half, I'll move my back-ups to the other time capsule using the provided feature. Additionally, because it is convenient, I move files between computers using the time capsules. Although they don't seem to do automatic backups on Linux, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (with Parallels the later seems to work, but I'm not 100% positive), I did a network restore of my Windows Vista Machine when a windows update wiped the operating system two years ago. I had previously manually stored the back-up on my time capsule.
