Incredible,
By Marcos Henrique (Piraju, SP Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An Apple a Day (Audio CD)
This is a lost treasure of psychedelia. Currently, the original vinyl is very, very rare and, of course, very expensive. But buy the CD edition and you won't regret! Incredible psych blues pieces (the two Yardbird's covers, "Psycho Daisies" and "Rock Me Baby"), and excellent and unpredictable 100% psychedelic songs ("The Otherside", "Buffalo Byllican", "Doctor Rock", "Mr. Jones"), make this album a masterpiece.

Solid English psych-pop,

I'm not sure what the previous reviewer expected when ordering this CD and then calling it "ABSOUTELY (sic) AWFUL", but this is prime UK 60's psych-pop. Not exactly THE greatest album of all time, but still very good and highly entertaining. It would be interesting to know exactly WHAT the reviewer found so awful about this album...The album is a blend of heavy R&B (á la The Yardbirds, which they do two covers of, by the way) and slightly whimsy UK psychedelia. The stand out track - The Otherside - is one of the greatest singles of British psychedelia, issued as the B-side of Doctor Rock in 1968. The single versions aren't very interesting and doesn't differ much from the album versions, except they're in mono. It's a pity that their last single Thank You Very Much / Your Heart Is Free Just Like The Wind wasn't tacked on as bonus tracks though.

The Doctor is Preferable,
This review is from: An Apple a Day (Audio CD)
Had high hopes for this, and was disappointed. Sounds more mainstream 60's British pop than psychedelic.
Competent playing, average vocals, and forgettable melodies. An album for collectors of albums from the era, not for listeners.

I guess I can understand the Yardbird references...sort of, but not really. There are shocks of fine fuzzed out lead guitar, but Apple is not a blues band. (although they make a good try with "Rock Me Baby" and "The Sporting Life)) Call 'em light psych or freakbeat. The star here may be "The Otherside," a piano driven track with a sharp guitar riff. It's a psychy little story quite nonsensible and fairyland-ish-like a lot of freakbeat song. Then again you may enjoy "Mr.Jones." This one is a bit turned backward with a nice piano/vocal intro spiced up with a full SPLHCLB Beatle tape pastiche that reappears mid song a few times. This one is a message to the "straights" (Mr. Jones) in the world. "Buffalo Billycan" and "Pretty Girl Love You" are squarely in the freakbeat camp whereas "Photograph" and Psycho Daisies" (Yardbords cover) are going from the late 60's sound. Apple is a band that is transitioning from Freakbeat to the harder rock of the late 60's. If you give it a few listens, you'll find that An Apple a Day isn't a bad album and is often pretty good.

Very cool power pop psych from the late 1960s.
Apple a day are panio driven, with self-contained straight forward songs. Remember "We Love You?" by the Stones--it is that kind of volume spiked, shining keybord. For psych, this is pretty light. Not in a Lemmon Pipper's sense, but if you can picture the craft of Syd Barret with absolutely none of the acidisms, Apple A Day sounds like this. Still, it runs on rock and roll apple seeds. This may not keep the doctor away, but will put you in a hell of a good mood. (Wow. First time I have seen 2-0-1-0 in print. Looks odd.)

It's not horrible, not great, but still fairly good!,
This review is from: An Apple a Day (Audio CD)
Other reviews have knocked this album by Apple, and it's definitely not a great album, but it is not a terrible album either. It has its moments and I still like this album, although maybe not every track on it, but there's still plenty on here to like. It all depends on your tastes I guess. I just think it is good/average Psych rock from the late 60's. Glenn Signal Hill, CA

This cd I really could say it's good and not so good. Half of the tracks like The Otherside and Buffalo Billy Can, are just great, and others like Doctor Rock i could really live without. It has liek 2 totally diffrent feels to it. but the songs that are good are definatly worth the buying the cd.

ABSOUTELY AWFUL,
By A Customer
This review is from: An Apple a Day (Audio CD)
This album is so bad I can't even express it in words. One thing I can tell you is unless you are some casualty from the sixties DO NOT BUY THIS CD!! I made the mistake of following the preivous review and it was a waste of money. This is the worst example of "psychedelic" music I've ever heard. I was trying to expand my horizons and take a chance on something I never heard and boy am I sorry. I'll never do that again. As far as the last review goes that person must have been in this horrible band and is looking for the royalties. I can't explain any other way.
