Book Description

November 30, 2011
Easily one of the most influential and popular design companies of our era, Apple has made electronics design history with its innovative iMacs, iPhones, iPods and iPads. Apple Design features over 200 examples of outstanding Apple designs by Jonathan Ive (born 1967), the company's Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, who since 1997 has been responsible for the design of all of Apple's products. Over the past decade, Ive and his team of designers have created elegant and user-friendly designs that have significantly advanced the brand's cult status as it enters the new millennium. Examining each of these in detail, and with full color throughout, Apple Design compares various approaches to industrial design alongside Apple's, and casts light on numerous aspects of its history, deepening our understanding of contemporary industrial design. Following an analysis of the forms and functions of the featured Apple products, the book provides an explanation of the innovative production methods and materials applied. Last but not least, it examines Apple design's overt references to the simplified forms of the products manufactured by the great German brand Braun, and enumerates the famous "Ten Rules for Good Design" promulgated by the company's chief designer, Dieter Rams, showing in each case how Apple has deployed and fulfilled them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Apple Design delves into about 200 such products, most of which have been overseen by Jonathan Ive, the company's vice president of industrial design (not to mention the late great Steve Jobs himself). Think of it as an excellent gift/companion piece for those who have already devoured Walter Isaacson's best-selling biography. (Rachel Wolff Departures 20121201)

This book will satisfy anyone interested in how best to marry beautiful design with practical function - whether you think of yourself as a Mac or a PC. (Jennifer Schiavone Metrosource 20121001)

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't care for it. November 17, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
To be perfectly honest, I returned it the day I received it. I was thoroughly underwhelmed by this book.

What made an older book, AppleDesign, much better, was the numerous photographs of prototype products. This book lacked any insider access to prototypes, and therefore is composed of facts and images I am already familiar with. Why bother keeping this book? You can easily get the same information and images found in this book on Wikipedia.

Let's see some prototypes next time? I'm not a mindless Apple-fan who will go crazy over anything remotely having to do with Apple. I'm looking for something new. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a simple picture book! January 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I would even call it a fitting tribute to Steve Job's legacy in pictures. The book is published by Hatje Cantz in conjunction with the Museum Fuer Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany. It's a beautiful designed book, from it's sleeve to the inside pages. The page layout represents understated elegance with lot's of white space and room for content and product images to breath.

It's not just a simple Apple picture book.

The FIRST HALF OF THE BOOK provides essays on design and dives into the history of Apple, via the following chapters

1) Making the Difference: Foreword
2) Stylectrical: On Electro-Design that Makes History - A Tour (provides a product legacy chart from 1998 to 2010)
3) Think Different! - Users and Their Darlings: On Apples, Machinesl, Interfaces Magic and the Power of Design
4) Strategic Design: How The New Eclipses the Old - Fundamental Principles of Product Design at Apple
5) The Apple Desiing Lie - Why The Design of Apple is Neither Good nor Minimalist. A Pamphlet
6) Kronberg Meets Cupertino - What Braun and Apple Really Have In Common
7) Full Metal Jacket - On the Material Of Apple Design
8) "All New Design" - The Secret of a Magical Corporate Success
9) Gardens of Earthly Delights
10) List of Works

The SECOND HALF OF THE BOOK is called "Designed For Apple by Jonathan Ive - 1997-2011". It starts with a product overview sorted by year and then images of each product, giving it ample space, often using the spread (2 pages) for a beautiful roomy and calm layout and presentation.

However not all the models in a series are represented. For example,

-> 2003 | PowerBook G4 Aluminium
Figure shows Apple, 9/2003, PowerBook G4 Aluminium, 15-inch
<-- Product shot -->
Further models in the series:
Apple, 1/2003, PowerBook G4 Aluminium, 17-inch, 12-inch
Apple, 1/2006, MacBook Pro, 15-inch
Apple, 4/2006, MacBook Pro, 17-inch

The book continues later with: -> 2008 MacBook Pro.

This book provides perspective and information of Apple's history and designs, explains the evolution of Apple's stores, draws parallels to the industrial design development, and much more. In addition, it features a beautiful layout and Apple product images from 1997-2011. If you are a design student it deserves a place on your book shelf, if you are an Apple fan it deserves a place on your coffee table.

For more information on Steve Jobs and his amazing work and life, read his biography by Walter Isaacson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Design for the masses January 14, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Regardless of your personal opinion towards Apple as a company, one thing above all else has separated Apple from its competitors, its design.
Apple Design is a beautiful book that chronicles page after page of technical and product evolution that illustrates what happens when the technology of manufacturer drives innovation itself.
Apple Design is destined to sit in the art and design section of you book self, not technology. Apple Design

cover...awful
It's really a pretty horrible cover... I hope the book is at least as good as the previous AppleDesign book.
