This thing is so fast..., January 2, 2006
This review is from: Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop M9592LL/A (Quad 2.5GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, 16x Dbl Layer SuperDrive) (Personal Computers)
If you need it, buy it. Never mind how much it costs, by the time you add memory, monitors, applecare, peripherals and software, you will spend $8000 or more. If you want to read e-mail, surf the web, play games, or balance your checkbook: this is not the computer for you. If you want a computer to do desktop publishing, image manipulation, 3d animation, ray tracing, or all of them at once: this is the one.
First, buy the apple care protection. It is so cheap, it's a no-brainer. Then, buy more memory. Remember, 4 Gigabytes is one Gig per processor, so don't be cheap. Upgrades must be done 2 chips at a time. I started with four, 1 GB chips, in addition to the original 512 MB. This seemed to be a wise decision at the time. I can expand or replace, whichever is most economical, next time I want to upgrade. Next, purchase a good surge protector. A UPS would be better, but keep in mind: this system will draw a lot of power. The power supply in the CPU can draw up to 12 amps. That's more than 1400 watts, before you even connect a monitor. A suitable surge protector should handle 15 amps continuously, and a 2000VA UPS is the minimum I would consider. It would not be a bad idea to give your computer system it's own 20 amp breaker. Next, buy your software. Adobe CS is about $1300, but worth the investment. It is a great package which I might someday review, if I ever get tired of playing with it. Next, monitors. Yes, plural. For graphic design and publishing, 2 is the minimum. It is so nice to be able to view your image full-screen with no toolboxes or palettes covering it up. Also, bigger is better. Other nice accessories include: pen tablet, air-port card, I-pod or other portable drive, scanner, printer, and speakers. A fast, reliable internet connection is nice, too.

unbelievable..., March 19, 2006

There is no question that you get what you pay for with computers. Macs do one thing - exactly what they are supposed to! It is great to have a system that runs flawlessly and FAST! I use this for boutique digital music production, and there is no system that I have used that compares to this. My suggestion is that if you run a business on a computer, and need speed to make your workflow happen, then this is a no brainer.

G5 Quad - the LAST PowerPC Mac before Intel!, April 23, 2011
This review is from: Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop M9592LL/A (Quad 2.5GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, 16x Dbl Layer SuperDrive) (Personal Computers)
Having owned one of these magnificent machines 2.5 years ago I can say that this is by far the best of the best for PowerPC. This thing literally flies through everything I throw at it! The great news to those who own older liquid cooled G5's, most of the Quads use a much better, and more reliable liquid cooling system which will prolong the machine for years to come(Do computers last that long? - some say, yes). If you are looking for a fine, secondary machine which will take care of most of your everyday tasks, even heavy ones this IS the one to get. With four processors(2 physical processors and 2 cores each), this machine cuts through even the simplest of apps. With Apple leaving PowerPC behind, there are still 1000's of smaller, minor developers developing for the PowerPC; it was simply not given the chance to grow. IBM's processors are not a failure, it was Apple's failure in not realizing the serious potential of the 970MP, the PPC G5 inside the dual core and quad core Power Mac G5. The only problem I have with the Quad compared to my 2010 mac pro is the noise level, but Apple offers three levels of processor controls with which you can control the speed of your processors, thereby silencing the fans even at the heaviest load.
I personally own 4, yes.. FOUR PowerPC macs and one Intel Mac Pro.. at the end of the day I love using my PowerPC because it feels like a real mac to me, while my Intel mac feels like a PC. For those with some likening towards PowerPC, you won't be disappointed at the sheer performance this one can do. If you already own an Intel Mac, do yourself a favor and pick up a second hand Power Mac G5 Quad - You'd be glad you did!
Macs I own are in order from most used to least used:
Power Mac G5 Quad
PowerBook G4 Hi-res 1.67
2010 Mac Pro 6-core
PowerBook G4 Pismo.
Despite what Adobe, Apple, and Mozilla say, the PowerPC still has plenty of life left in it. There are still 1000's of useful apps out there and don't forget the older versions of ilife, iwork etc.. - all work on PowerPC. So, if you aren't looking for the latest and greatest, this machine IS the one to consider for all your nostalgic needs, and also your everyday "light" needs, though the heavy power of 4 processors will amaze you with even the dirtiest and toughest apps out there.
