4.0 out of 5 stars Good performance and features in an elegant package, July 31, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Apple iMac G5 Desktop with 17" M9843LL/A (1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
This machine is the best value Mac for the casual user who doesn't need a DVD burner. It is reasonably fast, has a decently-sized LCD, comes with built-in wireless and Bluetooth, and it's not ridiculously overpriced compared to Win-Tel machines. Mac OS X and the supplied iLife programs are easy to use; AppleWorks, although pretty basic, is included too. Also, OS X 10.4 can run older OS 9 programs in the Classic environment, which works very well. Aesthetically it's a really nice design.

There are a couple of annoyances. The display tilts but doesn't swivel, you have to physically rotate the whole unit, which is a bit awkward. The fan, which is usually extremely quiet, speeds up when the processor is working hard and emits a whine. In a quiet room the whine is quite audible. The processor also gets hot (175 F) under heavy usage (e.g. movie compression)-this is the reason for the fan whine-so these iMacs may not be ideal if lots of processor intensive work is contemplated (hence the 4 stars).

Overall Apple has come up with a great computer in a very stylish package and at a bargain price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Computer, FAST AND GOOD STYLE, July 23, 2005
This review is from: Apple iMac G5 Desktop with 17" M9843LL/A (1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
Have this computer for 4 months, never have problem and work even faster than Windows XP. I also never have the crush like I did when I used Windows XP. Great Computer, Compact and Modern. The only problem is the software, sometimes I don't have much choices to choose because most of them compatible to Windows not Mac

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Machine, April 9, 2006
This review is from: Apple iMac G5 Desktop with 17" M9843LL/A (1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I purchased my I mac g5 back in October. It has been working way better than my HP. I have upgraded mine to a GB of ram. It is really fast. No problams. My only complaint is how loud it is. I don't know if that goes for just me or everyone. But overall this is a great computer. The all in one feature is nice, because i don't have to have all of the extra cords. I am switching over to mac now. Way better then windows. I never have to worry about viruses or firewalls.
