5.0 out of 5 stars Not included with the 20GB
The first review here is very helpful, but I believe there's a mistake. I thought it was important to note that this dock does not come with the 20GB 4g click wheel iPod. If you buy the 20GB iPod, this dock will be an additional $40 expense, which brings you almost halfway to the price of the 40GB iPod... which comes with the dock.

My gosh - it very much sounds that J. Freeman works for Apple, doesn't it?

Here's the lowdown on the cradle: I use it because it came packaged with my 30 GB ipod (one that I received a year and some months ago). It is very nice, but for forty dollars, I'd say it's very overpriced for what it does. Literally, the only differences when you buy this product...

5.0 out of 5 stars It does the job it is supposed to do, August 16, 2004

This dock works specifically with the 4th generation click wheel iPods. The firewire and the usb cable needed to connect this dock to anything are included with the iPod unit itself.

It comes with both the 20GB and 40GB dock sizes.

It does the following:

1. Allows you to stand up the iPod and connect it to the iPod charger (via the firewire).

2. Allows you to connect the iPod to your computer for syncing up with iTunes (via the usb cable or firewire if your pc has the port).

3. Allows you to connect to your computer speakers (via a 'line out').

The only slight issue I have with it is using the iPod menu system while it is resting in the dock. The dock is plastic, so there is a little give to it. I feel like if I don't go easy on it, I could possibly damage the dock. Usually I just take it out of the dock to make a selection, and then put it back in.

It is a handy item.

-You save 5 seconds not plugging in the cable itself.

-Your ipod is in a cool almost-vertical angle.

If you want to look cool, feel free to lighten your wallet. But my opinion is, if it didn't come with the ipod, it's not worth your money. It does the job it says it should - which is close to nothing (compared to those without it).

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but I wouldn't buy it again., June 22, 2005
This review is from: Apple Dock Kit for iPod 4G (White) (Electronics)
I find this really isn't necessary. I could connect the iPod directly to my computer via the USB port and it operated the same way, except it was lying down on the desk instead of standing up in the dock. If it weren't so expensive I'd give it more stars.

Another issue I had with the iPod -- and I recognize this is MY fault, not Apple's -- if you are one of those people who, like myself, become overjoyed by the arrival of a new product and immediately tear into it without stopping to read the directions, BEWARE! I was unaware it comes with two different dock covers for the 20gig and the 40gig iPod, and inevitably in my excitement I connected the wrong cover. It is not designed to unattach! If my handy Boy Scout fiance hadn't been around to detatch it for me (with difficulty), I'd still have the wrong cover connected and I probably wouldn't even be using it. Of course, that's my fault entirely for being overeager. Just be warned! :o)

1.0 out of 5 stars I found out I could do this for $2.99 !!!!, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Apple Dock Kit for iPod 4G (White) (Electronics)
The dock works, though completely unnecessary. I wanted to connect my iPod to my stereo. It sounds great !!! Unfortunately, it's sounds just as great using the headphone jack- which I found a 3.5 cord that splits into 2 RCA plugs at a national office supply store for $2.99. I find no difference at all in the sound. Had I found the cord first, I never would have bought the dock

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!, March 23, 2005
This review is from: Apple Dock Kit for iPod 4G (White) (Electronics)
The product comes the stand to hold the 20gb ipod and the 40gb ipod along with some electric thing where it gets connected. The bad part is that it doesnt come with anything else. Although it was my fault for not thinking about this, if you have a cover on your ipod it will not fit on the dock and you would have to take it off. The product description is very deceiving about the dock kit. It made me feel like it came with the right cables to connect it to my stereo. IT DOES NOT COME ANY CABLES! Unless you want to pay $37.99 or however much it is now just to make charging your ipod and playing it a little more flashier then go ahead. Just remember that the dock kit is ABSOLUTELY UNNECCESSARY TO BUY. You can do all the same stuff without it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary, but nice to have, November 27, 2005
This review is from: Apple Dock Kit for iPod 4G (White) (Electronics)
The dock is probably the most useless iPod accessory I've seen. All it does is keep your iPod off whatever its sitting on. Still, its cool to have. The best thing the dock has done for me is help to organize all my wires and keep my iPod off of my nightstand. Its pretty cool to go from listening to your iPod with headphones, snap the iPod into the dock, and have music playing right away. I managed to get it for $12, and that's about what its worth. The dock is DEFINITLY not worth $30 or $40. I'm so serious about that I'll say it again. The dock is DEFINITLY not worth $30 or $40. Period. The dock is cool to have if you can find it cheap, but not really necessary. I enjoy having it, but only because I got a deal for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but overpriced for what you get..., February 26, 2005
This review is from: Apple Dock Kit for iPod 4G (White) (Electronics)
This comes in really handy, but I was surprised it didn't come with an extra set of cords for the price. I basically paid $40 just for something to sit it up at an angle. If I had known that, I could have made my own stand. Apple really should either give you two dock kits for the price of one or include an extra set of cords (which would come in handy!) with the packaging. I wouldn't buy again or recommend unless the price dropped by about half the cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Deal at Apple, March 7, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Apple Dock Kit for iPod 4G (White) (Electronics)
This dock is a great accessory, but I think it should have come with the ipod. It is also insanely overpriced. You can get the dock straight from apple [...] for $30. That is a much better deal. That is also where I got my ipod. If you get your ipod there, you can have free shipping and 2 free lines of laser engraving.

better deal at apple

3.0 out of 5 stars Needed this to really enjoy my i-Pod, February 6, 2005

Why only three stars? Because the thing is insanely overpriced. Should go for $30 (if even that!). The best thing about it- you can easily connect it to your stereo through the bottom port for the best sound quality (otherwise, you're using the headphone jack), then use the firewire cable that came with your i-Pod for the power supply. I don't really dig listening to music with headphones...got the 'Pod to play through a real stereo. You'll also need a good quality sound cable to run from the dock to the stereo (go with the Monster Cable, if you can)

In short, if you only care about listening through headphones,

there's no reason at all for you to buy this.
