Book Description

BOOK ONE OF THREE.
The City of San Francisco is locked in a grip of fear. A series of occult murders has led, Inspector Thomas James, to a crime scene similar to a murder committed 90 years ago in the once grand Aleris Hotel. A place where power barons of the early 20th Century engaged in witchcraft. And silent film stars indulged in the most wicked of sins.

A place where no one questions the black smoke that rises from the hotel's incinerators in the middle of the night.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Page Turner February 21, 2011
By Wayne
Format:Kindle Edition
From the first page to the last, the story drove me to the next page, and to the next page, and on to the end.
The characters were brought to life as if I was watching a movie on the big screen. The action is incredible
and held me captive. In the story, the characters stood on their own, generating passion with every turn of
the page. I could not stop reading because I had to know what was going to happen next. It is a MUST read!
I can definitely see this on the big screen. Definitely.

1.0 out of 5 stars Makes no sense and is only part of the story November 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I rarely rate anything really badly, but this was just awful. Like another review stated, you can't tell if there is a serial killer or a ghost killing people. People die and catch on fire and keep killing. It goes in and out of what might be dream sequences, but you aren't sure if they are supposed to be dream sequences or real since all of these completely unbelievable supernatural things are happening. And multiple people trying to solve the mystery are receiving personal messages in the crime scenes. Oh, and yes, every famous mass murder in American history is somehow tied into the thing in ways that make no sense from Fatty Arbuckle to the Manson killings. And there is famous Nazi killer sprinkled into the mix as well. Really? I could not tell what was going on the majority of the time. And then it just ends in the middle, I supposed so you purchase the next section.

1.0 out of 5 stars How does this get such good reviews? December 20, 2011
By NY Luvr
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I saw this book recommended on Facebook so I though I'd give it a try. I also liked that it's set in San Francisco, near where I live. I am an avid reader and I like all kinds of books. I am also a fan of creepy stuff such as Dean Koontz and Stephen King so I though I would enjoy this book. Well I really struggled to finish it. It's like the author thought of every weird or creepy thing he could throw into the book, the Zodiac killer, Charles Manson, Nazis, the KGB, the devil, hell and some assorted famous Hollywood murders. However, none of these things were tied together. There were some particularly scary parts as others have mentioned but there was no cohesiveness to the story. And the ending? No big shocker, just another angle that the author has thrown in. I can only say that all the good reviews must come from friends of the author because this is one of the worst books I have ever read. I will NOT be continuing with this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dark and Twisted Ride! March 8, 2011

Official snapshot:

"The City of San Francisco is locked in a grip of fear. A series of occult murders has led, Inspector Thomas James, to a crime scene similar to a murder committed 90 years ago in the once grand Aleris Hotel. A place where power barons of the early 20th Century engaged in witchcraft. And silent film stars indulged in the most wicked of sins.

A place where no one questions the black smoke that rises from the hotel's incinerators in the middle of the night."

Literally, that is just the beginning. When Thomas James goes to the Aleris Hotel, he finds most of its inhabitants dead and what comes next is mind boggling.

This novel touched on everything from serial killers such as Manson (ok, arguably just a ring leader), The Black Dahlia, and Jack the Ripper to Nazi Germany and the scandalous days of Fatty Arbuckle.

I have to be careful not to drop any real spoilers here, but the story was evocative of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in its wide cast of characters and their eventual relationships to one another. There are ghosts, a set of wicked twins who are beyond supernatural, and symbolism akin to a dark Dan Brown.

The pace, the style, the characters were so well written that I finished this book in one sitting. I can't wait to find out about Zoe and will be at the front of the virtual line for the follow-up.

If you're looking for a dark and twisted ride, this book is for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible November 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Waste of time and money. Story jumps all over the place; is it about ghost, the devil or a serial killer? I still don't know and don't care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Book! An Absolute Must Read! February 27, 2011
By Annie
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
OMG! What a fantastic book! I can't believe I was left with a cliffhanger! I can't wait for the second book to come out so I can continue with the story. This is one of the top 3 books I've ever read. Masterfully done and left me sitting on the edge of my seat with every turn of the page! I'd give it way more than 5 stars if I could! Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read! February 25, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Whenever I read reviews and see the quote, "a rollercoaster ride of ...," I usually roll my eyes at the hyperbole; however, in this case, I have to say that An Apple for Zoe is about as close to that rollercoaster ride as you can get while sitting in a comfy chair. I really enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting, the action is exciting, and the twists are, well...twisted. I enjoyed the true crime histories intermixed with the supernatural and the pacing was excellent. The dialogue and certain scenes may be rather graphic (I wouldn't recommend this book for youngsters), but I didn't find it gratuitous. There are a few misspelled words and some grammatical errors, but the story more than makes up for them. My only request is for Mr. Amo to write quickly and finish this trilogy. I really want to know what happens next.
