4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, isn't very long November 16, 2012
Verified Purchase
I bought this adapter for my iPhone 5 because I have about a dozen expensive dock-connector accessories like car adapters, external microphone/recording adapters, and portable speaker systems that use the 30-pin dock connector, and I know none of these devices will be upgraded to the Lightning connector anytime soon.

I'm pleased to report that this adapter cable works with the following:

- Any generic USB-to-30-pin iPhone charger.
- Any generic iPhone audio adapter that simply puts out analog line-level audio.
- Any generic car adapter that plugs into 3.5mm audio and a usb cable for charging.
- Old USB to dock-connector cables that connect from a computer to your iPhone.
- Most other accessories (I've used it with a GuitarJack Model II, for example).

Good things about this cable:

- It 'Just Works' with almost any 30-pin cable or accessory.
- It's longer than the simple cable-less adapter.
- It's well-built, so it won't fray or break apart for a while (just be careful with it!).

Downsides to this cable:

- 0.2M is *really* short. Like, six inches.
- The cable is relatively thick (twice the thickness of a standard 30-pin USB cable or Lightning USB cable), so it's not too flexible.
- It's expensive. Hopefully some 3rd party can make a cheaper replacement, especially one with a longer cable!

4.0 out of 5 stars Know what you're buying and why... January 19, 2013
Verified Purchase
This adapter is more than just a connector change. It also has an Digital-to-Analog converter built in for supplying line level audio. This is why the Apple adapter is more expensive and why it's the only one able to play audio on most systems.

What changed?
The original 30 pin dock supplied a digital signal, analog audio, video, and more; the new Lightning port is digital only. Analog audio is still available via the headphone jack.

What do you need?
1. If your iPhone interfaces with your stereo through a USB connection, then you can use any adapter available on Amazon, even the cheap ones.

2. If your current dock connects to the radio via a 3.5mm stereo plug, RCA connection, or a cassette adapter, then you will have to use this adapter.

3. If the dock interfaces directly with the audio device, then it could be either digital or analog. You will have to research this yourself. Find out what your device uses and get the appropriate adapter (check the owners manual, contact the manufacturer, do your homework and don't be lazy).

Why would Apple do this?
More and more equipment is going full digital. The components and software used by the digital to analog converter can greatly affect the sound quality. This conversion would be handled far better by radio manufacturers than by Apple. Not to mention that we finally get to ditch the cumbersome, ugly, limited, and outdated 30 pin dock. Technology moves forward...

4.0 out of 5 stars Works, but too pricey January 10, 2013
Verified Purchase
Since upgrading to the iPhone 5 and iPad mini, I along with millions of other people are having to give up the trusty old 30-pin connector.

My car has a USB port instead of a 30-pin connector for hooking up mobile devices, so it was a simple fix - purchase a Apple Lightning to USB Cable and I'm done. However, my wife's car has a 30-pin connector and no way to replace it. So, it was time to purchase this item.

I purchased this adapter right before Christmas. Wrapped it up and gave it to my wife as one of her Christmas presents so that she could hook up her new iPad mini in the car that day. Took it out of the box, hooked it up, and nothing. Adapter didn't work. Thought maybe it wouldn't work in the car, so brought it in the house and hooked it up to an old 30-pin cable hooked up to a charger. Still didn't work. First one was DOA.

So, the day after Christmas I returned it and the next day I received the replacement from Amazon. Hooked it up in the car and it worked perfectly. Using the adapter, the radio in the car can see the iPhone 5 and iPad mini, can control them from an audio standpoint, and of course, the audio works. I've also tried the adapter out on two different audio devices in the house (one a Sony ICFCS15iPBLK 30-Pin iPod/iPhone Speaker Dock and one a JBL On Stage 200ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPhone 4/4S and iPod (Black)) and it works as intended on both of these.

We have OtterBox cases on both the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini, and this cable has no problem hooking up to them with the cases on.

It gets 4 stars only because the first one was DOA and had to be returned, and of course because it it way too expensive for what it is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works as designed - price is a huge negative November 26, 2012
In terms of reviewing the product itself - it works as designed. It lets you use those alarm clocks, docks, portable speakers, etc. that the lightning cable had rendered useless. As others have mentioned - it is quite short. Considering the price, they could have added a few more inches to allow the cable to be more flexible. A pro to this cable as opposed to buying the adapter (for 10 dollars less) is that it will work with most (if not all cases) and its bigger size means it shouldn't be lost as easily.

My reason for three stars is the huge difference in price between this and the regular lightning cable. I don't think that using a 30 pin adapter instead of a USB adapter warrants a 20 dollar difference in price between the cables. If they were priced similarly, it would be much more acceptable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Genuine Apple product with a genuine Apple price
Works as advertised. Would give it 5 stars. But the price and shortness of cord. Makes it only a 4 star in imho.

1.0 out of 5 stars save your time. doesn't work for video.
don't waste your time/money if you think this will convert video. If your USB connection works for your needs, you probably want to learn to adapt. this doesn't.
