So I got one of these little bad boys (the cheaper model) from the apple store the day after they came out. With a student discount it came out to be just under $600 after tax, so I figured why wait for it to be available on amazon for the same price.

I just ordered 4GB of ram for around $65 after tax and shipping. Just read on a few forums that once you put another gig of ram into the new lower end mac mini, the NVIDIA 9400M graphics card automatically allocates another 128MB of VRAM, making it have a total of 256MB VRAM (instead of 128MB in which it is originally configured with)!

For another $90 or so you can plop a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive into it. A faster drive then the higher end model comes with.

This makes it virtually pointless to pay another $200 for the $800 model, when you can pay a total of $760 for a model that is better:

- 4GBs of ram vs 2GB
- 320GB 7200RPM hard drive vs 320GB 5400RPM hard drive
- with the same NVIDIA 9400M 256VRAM

So whats the only draw back? You have to pop the baby open and install the ram and hard drive yourself.

Is that so bad? Not at all for me, but it may be for some. However there are already forums that contain detailed instructions with pictures and videos for doing so, and as long as you can follow instructions it should not be too difficult at all. It is also somewhat less difficult to deal with than previous models, in terms of installing ram and hard drive.

Oh, I forgot to mention that you can (at the moment, 3/9/09) also get a $6 rebate for sending the 1GB ram chip from your stock mac mini to OWC if you are planning to buy the 2x2GB modular set from them.

This Mac mini builds on the success of the last one. The biggest upgrade to the machine is the new graphics. With this change, movies and games perform much better.

Items of clarification: Currently the description on Amazon lists 4 USB ports, but there are actually five.

Also, the Mac mini no longer comes with an Apple Remote so if you're looking to use it as a media server, you may want to pick one of those up.

Our favorite upgrade in this new machine is the ability to handle more RAM. It can now address 4GB of RAM, and it is also DDR3 RAM so it performs much better.

Also, the upgrade to Firewire 800 allows for some very fast external drives if you're looking for increased storage.

We have a few hundred Mac minis performing as servers at macminicolo. According to our early benchmarks, this machine will be even better at for a server. No doubt this is due mainly to the faster, increased RAM.

I bought 4 of the minis, upgraded them myself (although I have never opened a computer in my life) to 4gb RAM and to 7200 RPM 320gb WD hard drives. Online video tutorials made it easy. I use a spatula with a 3 inch by 1.5 inch stainless steel blade and the minis open easily and quickly, without scratching. Be sure to use a magnetized phillips screwdriver when upgrading, the screws that hold the mini halves together are very small and hard to reach. Ram needs to be inserted with considerable force, most of the gold edge should not be in view or your machine will not recognize the new RAM.

I later added VM fusion, followed by Windows XP Professional sp3, then Microsoft Office 2007. Now these little guys can do almost anything. I also have a 2009 24 inch Imac and a late 2008 aluminum Macbook and these minis more than hold their own in comparison. I love that I can easily carry them from office to home if needed. Buy the new Mini Display to HDMI converter, and don't mess around with the bulky DVI adapters and cables unless there is no other choice.

I have since placed one of my minis under my T.V. and run the sound through an optical digital cable (tosk to mini tosk) to my surround sound system. I put a 500gb hard drive into this mini and placed all my movies and music on it. With my ipod remote I can now listen to music or watch movies from the couch. At work or at home, I highly recommend the 2009 Mac Mini.

I purchased this unit for $600 new from Amazon. I opened it up right out of the box and installed 4GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive. Those parts cost me $160 brand new. Now I have a machine with a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of DD3 1067MHz ram, 256MB discrete (the card is discrete, only the ram is shared unlike the previous model which had shared graphics as well) Nvidia graphics, Dual-Layer Superdrive and the fastest/latest Wifi and Bluetooth. For $760 and considering this is a Mac, this is a great deal all around. It is smoking fast and fast enough for everything but the heaviest audio and video editing workloads. I am a professional photographer using Adobe CS4 and running a 25.5" LCD monitor and it performs flawlessly and quickly. I see no need for a more expensive Mac unless, as I said, I were a professional video/sound editor who had an absolute need for a Mac Pro. An unqualified 5/5 stars.

I am moving from an older (see previous reviews) Mac Mini to this one.

I decided to make the move for the new video card - NVIDIA (the old video was shared Intel), the new DDR3 RAM (old one DDR2) and the faster front side bus 1066 Mhz (old one was 667Mhz).

I maxed out the RAM at 4 GB - which automatically maxes out the shared video to 256 MB Video RAM.

NOTE: you don't have to buy the larger hard drive Mac Mini to get the 256 MB Video, just max out the RAM!

I admit, I thought that moving to this Mini from my old Mini might be a waste of money...the specs weren't 'that' different...

I couldn't have been more wrong. The difference is NIGHT and DAY.

The video is clearer...the applications snap open faster...seriously, the difference from my old Mini to the new Mac Mini is night and day.

I am using the Mac Mini in an entertainment system - my 'monitor' is a Panasonic 42" plasma - which the video card immediately recognized. (With the old Mini and the Intel card I had to manually 'tweak' the screen to get it to fit).

I was up and running in 5 minutes...

I am mostly using the Mac Mini for entertainment - 650 GB of Audio / Video. That said, I do use the Mini for Photo (50 GB of the 650), and the occasional making of a DVD.

I paired the Mac Mini with an external CalDigit VR 2TB drive - connected via Firewire 800. I then 'pointed' all of the 'i' apps Mac Mini (iTunes, iPhoto, iDVD) to look there for files.

And, so far so good!

Quick comparison of speed - using the same settings in a certain program to rip the same DVD -

Old Mac Mini - 4 hours

New Mac Mini - 1.2 hours

One word - Amazing!

I would, without hesitation, recommend the new Mac Mini to anyone - if you were holding off for the latest Mac Mini - this is it!!
