Product Description

The Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter lets you connect the 30" Apple Cinema Display HD to a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air with a Mini DisplayPort. The new MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air each have a Mini DisplayPort that allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees. Use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to connect your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air to a 30" display that includes a DVI connector, such as the 30" Apple Cinema Display HD, and enjoy the ultimate widescreen canvas with a 2560x1600 resolution.

3.0 out of 5 stars You NEED the adapter with the Firmware 1.03 November 5, 2010
There are few iterations of this adapter (I've had them all and exchanged/sold them until I found how to solve the issues).

There are 3 firmware versions - 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03. The problem is that one cannot say without opening the box and connecting both to the computer and to a monitor what is the installed firmware. Even worse, the adapter's firmware is not upgradeable (by the end-user or thru Apple Menu / Software Update). After connecting both to the computer and to the monitor - you can find the installed firmware of the adapter at Apple menu / About This Mac / More Info... / Hardware / Graphics/Display and scroll down to see if it the 1.01, 1.02 or 1.03. Only the 1/03 works reliably with the non-Apple branded 2560 x 1600 monitors.

Now - you can go and hassle with the Apple Geniuses at the Apple Store. The product has 1 year warranty and _should_ be replaced by them (good luck with that - I had to go several times to them to find someone willing to exchange and open the box and install the adapter and check that is the 1.03 firmware...)

Overall it finally works (I have two), but only with the 1.03 firmware.

2.0 out of 5 stars Often causes video problems March 6, 2009
For a few months I was using the regular mini displayport to dvi adapter with no problems at all (with a 24" monitor). This week I got a new 30" Dell monitor (DELL3007WFPHC) and the mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter. Our IT guy warned me that several other people in our company have been having problems with the adapter. The adapter and monitor worked fine when I first connected them.

After using it for the first day, I don't believe I had any problems at all. On the second day, I began to have the problems mentioned by our IT guy and by several other people on the Internet. Occasionally, the screen will either contain static (or snow), or alternating horizontal lines will be shifted a few pixels. These problems occur while I am actively using the system (not when coming out of sleep mode, etc.) Regardless of the behavior, the only recourse is to unplug the displayport cable, which causes all of the windows to be repositioned on the laptop, and then plug the displayport cable back in. Then I have to move all of the applications back to their original locations.

This is partly into my third day with the adapter and have had to unplug and replug it about 4 times already. Our IT guy said that our company has returned several of the adapters, but the replacements don't work any better than the ones they have returned. There is obviously something broken in the design of these adapters, but hopefully this will be fixed sometime in the future. I am considering going back to my old 24" monitor so I don't have to put up with these problems. All of my coworkers with older MacBook Pros (with the built-in dual-dvi adapter instead of the mini displayport) do not have any problems with the 30" monitors.

If you have a monitor with a high resolution that requires dual-dvi and an Apple laptop with the mini displayport, then this adapter is your only solution to get it to work. Unfortunately, I think you are almost guaranteed to have problems with this adapter.

We purchased two of these adapters for our department and both have severe issues mentioned every where else online. Someone the adapter creates static on dark (black) area of the screen. I believe this is due to the conversion creating noise on black which should have nothing displayed. Also, on the dell monitor, a few times the screen would fuzz up probably due to dual-link adapter reverting to single link. The only fix is to remove the cable and reinsert it.

Apple support was of no help when I called. They referred me to the apple store. This issue is widespread. Apple claims the Cinema Display are working properly but I've tried it on two different monitors and both have issues.

Tried a lower-priced third party product first which did not work. Replaced it with this Apple-brand device which, as usual, just works.
