Here's how to renew your MobileMe account with this product,

This is a great bargain compared with buying a renewal from Apple for $99. But renewal online using this product is a little tricky; you have to bypass renewal by credit card etc. at Apple's price. Here's how:
1) Go to www.me.com and log in. 2) Go to Account (click on your name at top right). You'll be asked to enter your password again. 3) Select "Billing Info" in list at left 4) Click on "Apply Activation Key" in bottom left 5) Click radio button "Apply to an existing account" and enter the 16-letter activation code in the box you have bought here 6) Confirm Renewal (you may have to enter your name and password yet again). Enjoy!

I have no qualms with MobileMe. I use it to host my website, and that's great. What I do have a problem with is how this was purchased. All you are getting is a product code. That is it. This has me wondering why shipping an empty box from New Jersey to Seattle, WA, is needed. Talk about a waste of resources: packaging, fuel for shipping, labor to package and ship it. Now, I'm grateful for the lower price on Amazon (saved around 25 frog skins when compared with Apple), but the delivery needs to be something like this: buy MobileMe code -> have MobileMe code e-mailed to me -> use MobileMe code.

Getting better, still overpriced,

MobileMe has been much maligned over the years. Used to go by the name of .Mac. Apple charges $99 a year for the service, way more than it's worth, but you can usually catch it at a discount on Amazon which brings the price closer to the true value.
If you have multiple Macs or an iPhone, MobileMe is great to have. Allows you to synch up your favorites, mail accounts, system preferences, from device to device. You can also find, lock, and remotely wipe your iPhone using the service. Truth be told though I think for most users the iPhone locate/wipe/lock features will be fun to play with once or twice and never used again. MobileMe offers online storage and web page creation as well. The problem with these two areas is that there are so many cheaper (even free) services that do the job better. I think for me the biggest drawback is that the online storage component, iDisk, still does not offer SSL or encryption, which makes storing files online a risky proposition. MobileMe is worthless if you are a Windows user. Apple's trying, it's getting better -- I think it's worth about $29.99 now. Keep trying, Apple.

We all know that Apple has the market cornered on integration of software and hardware. This product is fantastic. HOWEVER, one note of caution. IF you are using it in a Windows environment, there is no native support for ICal or contacts on a Windows machine. OUTLOOK IS REQUIRED!
(Mac folks, if you are looking for the companion software on your Mac, look in system settings and click on .Mac or MobileMe) If you have an Iphone, this is a MUST HAVE application. Not only will it synchronize your contacts and calendars to the web, it can locate your phone if it is lost. If you Iphone is on, it can send a text message and sound off (even if your sound is turned off) It will locate the phone within 1 Meter if it has a decent GPS AND Cell tower signal. It will give an approximate Google Maps placement to within say 1/4 mile if there is no GPS signal. (At least you can know that yeah I did leave the phone at my friends house. If you can not find the IPhone, MobileME can wipe the data on your phone clean the next time someone turns it on. If you phone is damaged or recovered after wiping it clean. When you replace it, your contacts are automatically updated in minutes from the last time you synchronized it. Finally, MobileME gives you virtual hard disk space to back up and snag important files from ANYWHERE to any machine with internet access. The method is not nearly as cluggy as other systems like Carbonite or others. Hey, what can I say... it works :-)

Great features if you have itouch or iphone,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I love the features this offers. I can sync my itouch with my mac without even docking it. my calendar, addressbook and email are all automatically updated. it also updates pictures. it does this all through push technology. with itouch you have to be in a wifi spot to sync without docking. with iphone you just have to be where you get service. also, all information is on web so you can look it up from any computer if you forget your itouch. had i known about this, i probably would have saved the money on my blackberry and just kept a regular cell phone and then purchased this for my itouch. blackberry's have lots of problems syncing with macs so i am very excited about this program because i can keep my information with me on my itouch.
i forgot to add that this keeps my multiple mac laptops synced with each other without me having to do anything. I have used this product for almost a year now. I purchased it again to renew it as it is cheaper usually to do that through amazon. One thing to remember is that if you catch it at a good price, you can renew anytime during your membership and it will add another year to your membership--even if you are only 1 day in. I know some people that bought 5 and have 5 years worth--there doesn't seem to be a limit to how long apple will let you pay in advance. I think it is worth every penny. there is usually a 60 day free trial through apple if you want to check it out.

I really like MobileMe and the sync of my iPhone with my iMac. Cheaper on Amazon for renewal of my membership, than through Apple.

I would have had to pay $99 through Apple. I checked with Apple's customer service, and they hinted that the outside vendor "key" might not work. I asked whether they had ever had a reported problem with MobileMe service through Amazon, and she said they had not. I went ahead and renewed my MobileMe through Amazon and got the key. It worked perfectly. Nice to have the same service at a discount. If you're renewing (or buying) a family plan, there's a significant discount through Amazon as well.

If you want to buy or renew MobileMe, there's no cheaper way than to buy it online. Basically, your just paying for a code that's inside the sealed box. Enter that code online and your MobileMe subscription is renewed. I don't know why I paid $99 in the past, but no more. Now, I get the same service for $30 less every year.

Find My iPhone Makes It Worthwhile,

For years I had this service when it was called .Mac, but after discovering Dropbox and Foxmarks I stopped using it. However, being an iPhone owner who lives out of her phone, I started to get nervous about what would happen if I lost it or it was stolen. I hate using the keylock feature, but it's pretty irresponsible not to, right? How else can I protect my phone and all my data?
With MobileMe, that's how. If you ever lose your iPhone, just log on to [...] and find it (as long as it's still turned on, of course)! You can set a lock code (or override one that's already set), send the phone text messages and play sounds that will pop up even if you've locked the phone or it's on silent or vibrate. And, if you're afraid your phone will never make it back to you, you also have the option to completely erase all of the data, restoring the phone back to factory settings. (And, as a nice touch, if you do happen to find your phone eventually, you can restore it back to how you had it before.) Calendar, bookmarking and contact syncs are great, too, as is the iDisk space and domain hosting, but after Find My Phone everything is pretty much icing on the cake. (And iPad owners can find their missing iPad the same way, too.)

Seamless but not best of breed,

I use MobileMe because it is so well integrated with MacOS that I don't have to fight my IT. This is particularly true around the core features like calendar and contact synching between two Macs and two iPhones.
It's not perfect though; quirky stuff still happens (like my password getting lost), very occasionally data train wrecks occur (typically duplication rather than loss which makes it annoying rather than exasperating) and so on. Moreover, performance for any heavy lifting (e.g. Gallery & iDisk) from Europe can make for a painful experience. What's most disappointing though is that no part of MobileMe is best of breed. Gmail is better than mail.app. Google Calendar laughs in the face of iCal. Dopbox makes iDisk look soooo last century. Gallery is form over function. BUT, it does all work together. Mostly. You might find this thread interesting. [...] |
