This is a must-have accessory if you are planning to use any of the Mac thunderbolt features.I used mine first to run migration assistant from my Macbook Pro (2011) to my Macbook Air (2011) and it took less than 30 minutes to copy over what normally takes 3-4 hours using firewire, or 8-10 hours using ethernet cables. Next purchase will be a Thuderbolt enabled backup disk, since those will be zippy and fast. At either rate, it's the only choice you have since there are no licensed third party thunderbolt cables.

The built quality is excellent. I use it to connect my MacBook Air to my iMac display. Connect the MacBook Air to the iMac and press Command-F2 (on your iMac) to trigger the connection. It works perfectly.

Seems like a lot of money for a cable but it has a few chips in it to keep up the speed. Hopefully cables will get cheaper and, of course, the Thunderbolt standard is superior to USB 3.

I purchased this cable due to the fact that I replaced my two older Macs with three new 2011 models this past summer. I first purchased a MacBook Pro, followed by an 11" Air, then finally a 27" iMac. Before buying the iMac, I was considering the new 27" Thunderbolt Display, but this iMac was only $400 more and can do all the same things. Therefore, I sold my older Mac Mini and bought the iMac. Now, it is more than just an awesome fast computer because I can use it as a second monitor for either of my laptops. This works great, as the iMac is connected to my stereo system and the Thunderbolt cable allows for audio to pass through as well. It worked perfectly the moment I connected it, and the Target Disk mode function works as well. This allows easy, extremely fast transfer of files between the computers, although you do have to boot one computer in Disk Mode, so it's not as fast as using the Target Display function. I also am expecting a future upgrade to the Seagate external hard drive I have, as they have promised to release a Thunderbolt connector for it, so I will have this cable if needed for that as well as any other future Thunderbolt-capable devices. I know many people were unhappy that Apple released Thunderbolt and did not put USB 3 in their computers, but Thunderbolt is 4 times as fast so as more products come out for it this will not be a problem at all.

As an owner of an iMac and a MacBook Air, I got this to transfer programs to the Air, which only has a Thunderbolt port (not a Firewire). It didn't seem like it was that quick (though I'm sure it was as fast as it could've been). I was also a bit puzzled that I had to boot the iMac so it would act only as a drive (holding down T). Would've figured one machine would've simply recognized it was connected to the other as the wires were connected, but oh well. When I wanted to use the iMac's disc drive to install software on the Air, it took a lot of poking around on the Air to get it to work, and even more poking around to eject the disk from the iMac. Not cool. I'm sure there are things you can do with this cord that ultimately takes advantage of its advertised speed, but for my purposes, it seemed like $50 I had to spend in order to get software on my Air (without using the bluetooth or wifi). But now that I'm done moving the software, I really don't even need it. Could've just used USB to USB.
