Product Description

Amazon.com

Gather up your friends to watch some videos or slideshows together on the big screen--connect an iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your HDTV or home theater receiver using this component AV cable from Apple.

Connect to the Big Screen

The component AV cable connects to your device or universal dock via the standard iPod 30-pin dock connector. On the other end are component (Y, Pb, and Pr) video and red/white analog audio ports, for an easy connection to your HDTV or stereo receiver.

You can go with strictly audio, too, of course. Connect to your stereo or powered speakers for a room-filling music experience.

Power-Ready

The cable also features a USB connector that you can plug in to a power source like an Apple USB power adapter, enabling you to keep things charged while you enjoy your media.

What's in the Box

Component AV cable and user's guide.

Product Description

Connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to the component video inputs on a TV. The cable also features audio and USB connectors.

I'm not sure if I got a faulty cable or a recent software update has messed up the video out, but this cable is only outputting sound. I've tried two iPhone 4, and an iPod touch (most recent generation) on three different TVs and none of them worked. Message that pops up on the screen says "device not optimized".

UPDATE: I exchanged this cable for the "old version" Apple Component AV Cable (OLD VERSION)[Retail Packaging] and it works perfectly. I read on several sites that there was a large batch of the cables that were faulty. Make sure you keep your packaging! There is no pop up message when I plug it up, and when you go into itunes to play a video, it says, "playing on TV".

In short, I think a quick way to determine if you got a faulty cable would be to plug it in and play a video in iTunes. If it doesn't say on the iPod/iPhone screen that it is playing on the TV, don't bother hooking it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Picture, Poor Design March 31, 2011

I've had these cables for about 2 months now and they are fantastic! I have an iPhone 4 and stream netflix all the time (grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T). The quality is pretty darn good. I use it on a 55 inch LED tv, 32 inch LCD, and a 19 inch LCD. All great!

I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the connectors design. Like most other reviewers stated, they are hard to grip and transfer from tv to tv. But if you only use this on one tv, it's 5 star worthy!

This component cable will output movies, music, slideshows, YouTube, iTunes University video, etc, to a TV.

It will not output many of the apps, such as Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Epic Citadel. Apple store's message was: "it is app specific", but many apps I tried, it won't work. I hope Apple's website has more info about it.

Individual photo viewing will not show, but slideshow will.

The above was tested using iPhone 4, iPad 1, and iPad 2.

Note that for 100% mirroring, iPad 2 with an HDMI cable is said to work.

I got the component cables so that I can record gameplay, but it won't work -- I have a box that records component video/audio signal into a computer file, but iPad apps are not showing the video. If using an HDMI cable, there isn't a recording device I am aware of that can take HDMI signal and record it. The other way seems to be using a VGA output cable from iPad, and then using a VGA recording box that can record the video signal to a computer file.

So the real use for me is for watching movies, but I have a computer hooked up to the TV already, so even for iTunes Univ videos, I can use the computer and run iTunes and stream it to the TV.

I just hope on Apple Store's website, a more detailed description is there so that customers can make a more suitable choice for themselves.

3.0 out of 5 stars thin wires
It works but the wires are very thin and can break very easily. I would be very careful when you use them.
