The Apple Mac mini with OS X Server packs even more power, thanks to the latest dual-core and quad-core Intel processors. It also comes with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, Thunderbolt, USB 3, and OS X Mountain Lion--the latest release of the world's most advanced desktop operating system. And it's as easy as ever to set up and run.

Mac mini front
The powerhouse Mac mini with OS X Server (view larger).

Mac mini rear
Plenty of ports, including USB 3, HDMI, and Thunderbolt (view larger).

This version of the Mac mini with OS X Server (model MD389LL/A) features a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor as well as 4 GB of RAM (expandable to 16 GB) and two 1 TB of hard drives for a total of 2 TB of storage right out of the box (see full specifications below). It also comes with the iLife software suite, which includes the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand.

Key Features

Small Footprint, Excellent Versatility

The Mac mini features a precisely constructed unibody enclosure that even houses its own integrated power supply into the 7.7-inch square aluminum enclosure (that's also 1.4 inches thin)--eliminating the need for an external power brick. Additionally, the Mac mini helps contain your environmental footprint with a 10 watt power consumption.

Despite its smaller size, the Mac mini offers a full range of ports for connecting to your existing peripherals--from keyboards and mice to external hard drives and displays (via the Thunderbolt and HDMI ports). And when you're ready to add more memory, the Mac mini's bottom removable panel makes the upgrade process a breeze.

Revolutionary Thunderbolt Technology

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O (input/output) technology delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions. Built into the Mac mini, the Thunderbolt port allows you to connect to new Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals as well as existing USB and FireWire peripherals using simple adapters. You'll be able to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, and you can daisy-chain up to six high-speed devices without using a hub. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

USB 3

With USB 3 built into the Mac mini, you can connect your external hard drive and transfer large files in seconds instead of minutes. Every Mac mini comes with four USB 3 ports--with speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2--and you can connect all your USB-compatible devices, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod, or digital camera.

Intel HD Graphics 4000

Intel HD Graphics 4000 delivers up to 65 percent more pixel-pushing performance than the previous generation of integrated graphics. So the video you watch and the games you play are smoother and more responsive. Flipping through photo albums is a breeze. And you've got all the power you need to edit your HD video into a film worthy of a red carpet premiere.

Bought the 16GB-RAM version of this guy a few weeks back to replace a Dell Linux server which was noisy and bad. MacMini just as if not more fast than the Dell it replaced, and is whisper silent which is awesome. More than capable of running multiple linux server VMs for additional applications.
Easy to administer from the command line of course but it's nice to have VNC remote desktop as an option as well.

Only major thing to be aware of going in is that the filesharing services only service SMBv2. Windows clients will not have trouble with this but it will break (for now) requests from Linux samba clients, until the maintainers of the linux cifs client project incorporate support SMBv2. Backwards support for SMBv1 would have been nice, but the speed boost with SMBv2 is very noticeable and it's really on the linux developers to get their cifs client caught up to improvements in the technology.

I just want to point out the pricing of this product. For an additional $240 over the MD366LL/A model here at Amazon you get an extra 1TB drive and the $20 Server application. Assuming you are buying this for server use, thats $220 for a 1TB drive. You will undoubtedly need external drives for more capacity anyway, so ask yourself is $220/1TB worth it?

I don't have this model, but bought and continue to use the original Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server. Back then the $1000 price got you the second hard drive instead of a DVD drive over the mid-price model, but Snow Leopard Server OS cost $500, so you were only paying $500 for the hardware! Apple reduced the price of the server $480 but didn't lower the cost of the system at all.

These minis work well as server computers, but I'd recommend buying the "regular" Mac mini and Server app separately to save money.

The Mini is not so mini anymore, it's about 8" square; but that said, it packs a powerful punch. I added 16 more gigs of DRAM and hooked it up to a Thunderbolt Display, and it's a pretty darn good computer. I can run Photoshop, InDesign, Safari, Mail and other programs at the same time.

To tell you the truth, I am still getting used to my Mac Mini so this may not be the best review, but as a 20 year PC user, I finally made the switch.
Is it different? Yes.
Is it confusing? At times it is, but the more I use it, the better I like it.
I do like the processing speed for movies and graphics. I was finally able to covert the two hours of HD video from my in-laws vacation into a movie, although I had to buy a Samsung DVD writer ($29 on Amazon) because there is no optical drive. My son, who has an iPhone and Macbook pro, is helping me with a few things and the interconnectivity of all the Apple devices is cool. I guess my next phone will be an iPhone.

Apple server works well out of the box. Clean packaging easily configurable Server.

Server OS is included, but it could also be purchased for $20 in the App Store.
