Product Description

Product Description

The Apple Mac Pro Intel Xeon Quad-Core Desktop has been designed to be the fastest Mac ever--and it does not disappoint. Utilizing the latest technologies and the finest eco-friendly materials, this generation of Apple's Mac Pro series continues the legacy of power, speed and expansion it has come to be known for.In addition to the raw power of the 12 cores, the boost performance can get up to 1.5x that of the normal processing speed. With high-performance ATI Radeon HD graphics and ultra fast solid-state drive options your potential speed and performance is further enhanced--with up to 5x faster video performance and 2.5x faster encoding. Expansion is fast and simple as well with the easy-access provided by the well-designed interior of the Mac Pro. It is literally a "snap" to add up to 64 GB of memory, four PCI Express expansion cards and up to 8.0 TB of HDD or SSD storage. With these impressive features and many more, your Mac Pro Intel Xeon 12-Core Desktop will easily tackle nearly anything you throw at it--while also functioning very efficiently. Compliant with Energy Star 5.0 ratings and thoughtfully designed with a highly recyclable aluminum enclosure, as well as being BFR- and PVC-free, it will have a large impact on your workflow, but not so much on the environment.

The Apple Mac Pro is the fastest, most powerful Mac ever. It features dual Intel Xeon 6-core processor, for a total of 12 processor cores. Powerful ATI Radeon HD graphics are perfect for advanced 3D modeling and rendering. You can add up to 64 GB of memory, four PCI Express expansion cards, and up to 8 TB of hard drive storage. And Mac Pro comes standard with OS X Lion--the world's most advanced desktop operating system.

This Mac Pro (model MD771LL/A) is powered by two hyper-threaded 2.4 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon series processor with a Turbo Boost feature that automatically boosts the processor clock speed based on workload. It also features the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory.

It's outfitted with 1 TB of hard drive storage and 6 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM. The interior provides easy access to all components within the Mac Pro for hassle-free expansion and upgrade capability--up to 64 GB of RAM and four hard drive bays for up to 8 TB of storage under the hood. And while it comes standard with a 18x SuperDrive (compatible with burning DVD±R/RW and CD-R/RW discs), you can also add a second writing SuperDrive.

Key Features

Apple Mac Pro
The easy-to-access interior (see larger image).
Easy Expansion

With the easy-to-access interior of the Mac Pro, all you need to do is simply remove the side panel in order to add hard drives and memory. And adding a new hard drive to take advantage of the 8 TB maximum capacity of the Mac Pro is a cinch--just slide out one of the four direct-attach, cable-free drive bays to add a Serial ATA hard drive or solid-state drive. Lock the drives with the side door latch, and you're done.

Maximize your system memory up to 64 GB from the four memory slots of this dual-processor Mac Pro model with 8 memory slots (4 per processor) using 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, or 8 GB DIMMs. And just like adding storage, the easy access interior makes it a snap to re-configure your memory--slide out the processor tray, then simply snap new memory into place.

Multiple Video Output Options

The Mac Pro features two Mini DisplayPorts and one dual-link DVI port. The additional Mini DisplayPort output allows you to connect two displays without an additional graphics card or adapter, and the dual-link DVI port supports legacy DVI-based displays up to a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.

Accelerated Architecture

The Intel Xeon processor supports Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So, for example, this dual 6-core Mac Pro presents 12 processor cores and 24 virtual cores that are recognized by OS X. Performance is enhanced because Hyper-Threading enables the processor to take better advantage of the execution resources available in each core.

System memory is often connected to a processor through a separate I/O controller. But Intel Xeon processors feature an integrated memory controller. By connecting memory directly to the processor, the Mac Pro processors have faster access to data stored in memory, and memory latency is reduced.

People should understand that the Mac Pro can be updated to USB 3.0 by purchasing a PCIe card. An Esata6G card can also be added which is faster than USB 3.0 but can,t power peripherals but as this is a desktop computer that should not be too much of a problem as power is close to hand. Also upgrading to a PCIe SSD card is one of the best investments to make with the Mac Pro this will give a super fast boot drive, and by-passes the problem of the HD bays only being 3G in fact the PCIe SSD is faster than an SSD 6G in a 6G compatible computer. OWC can provide 48Gb RAM for the 6 core and up to 96 for the 12 core. 24 Gb is the cheapest option for RAM 3x8Gb sticks (for the 6 core) and for most people this would probably be sufficient, if you are feeling rich go for 3x 16Gb. As you can see there is life left in the Pro and despite its age its still a good bet compared to the latest iMac (which for some tasks IS faster but for some others its not) PLUS it's not designed for the user to make any upgrades to hard drives on any model but the ram is user upgradable on the 27' model. Software that will work with 6 or 12 cores will still be better on the Pro and remember this computer is large for a good reason, heat dispersal.
If you are looking for a machine that can have a PCIe boot drive 5 HD bays (there are 4 std bays but the second optical bay if not used can have a 3.5/2.5" HD/ssd caddie put in or a 2.5" HD/SSD plugged into the cable and just hang there.
At this time (Feb 2013) i do not believe there is a Thunderbolt solution for the Mac Pro and probably there never will be but this is not such a big deal as the alternative solutions mentioned above give very good connection flexibility.
Edit: the sweet spot for photography is the 6 core 3.

This New 12 Core Processor is more than I expected.... I've been using the IMAC I3 computer since 2010 and was very satisfied with the performance; my main purpose for the unit was audio production for my Home Studio with Logic Pro.

Then my business process moved to video editing and I moved to Apple Final Cut X; and that's where my problem of poor performance due to horsepower...Rendering a 20min video took 32+hours.
The same footage with my Mac Pro only took 25min to render... WOW
Apple got it right....Amazon you guys are the best thing to happen to on-line service!

Beware, OS X 10.7.3 May be pre Installed... You may need to Buy an upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion if You need or want it.

I Bought one of these 12 core Mac Pro's on 6/10/13 from LLC. To My surprise when it arrived, OSX 10.7.3 was installed on it, even though the description on the website says "Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion Operating System" is. I contacted Apple and they said they would not honor their up to date program because I had not bought it directly from Apple. I told Amazon, they promptly exchanged it for another one, however once the next one arrived, I quickly checked it and it too was OSX 10.7.3.

Amazon may be dealing with very old stock in this case. They then said they would review the item and stop selling it until they cleared it up, and would not send Me another replacement because it most likely would be incorrect too. Less than a day later they were selling it again. Since there is no way to tell from the serial numbers on the box what osx version is installed (Even Apple can't tell), and the only way to really tell is to boot the mac, I believe Amazon elected to risk it and continue to sell the stock on hand rather then corrupt it by opening and verifying every mac. I get it, however I just Wanted to share My experience with others.

To Be Clear, Amazon did their best to handle this and I am still a loyal Amazon customer. This was a unique case that was caused by Apple's faulty labeling that does not indicate what version of osx is actually installed on the Mac Pro, even though they have at least 4 specific details about the actual Mac Pro in the box on the external label, not the osx version.

The upgrade to Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion Operating System is about 20 dollars from Apple so its not a big deal.
However is was important to Me because I bought this Mac Pro to run an Application that only runs on Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion Operating System or higher,
so... it is what it is...

After using a Mac Pro, you couldn't GIVE me an iMac.

I love the expandability of this machine. I have multiple hard drives, a Blu-Ray DVD burner, regular DVD burner, all inside the enclosure. (I can change the hard drive in this computer in 30 seconds with no tools!)

I have also added expansion cards to give me more FireWire and USB ports.

I use this machine for my video work, (for maximum quality I use iMovie 06 and iDVD 11).

I also like being able to pick out my own display.

The Mac Pro is awesome!

This 12 core Mac Pro released in 2010 still can do the job even if it is past it's 'used by' date. This replaces my G5 tower. You will want to be sure your software can take advantage of all 12 cores, otherwise you are money and time ahead buying a four core model that runs at a higher clock speed. Good information can be had at macperformanceguide com / Reviews-MacProWestmere. I use it for surfing, email and folding at home which I will only do on a Mac. Still a good deal at the twenty five hundred Amazon had it for on sale very briefly in early Mar of '13.

Almost four months after buying this item a scammer claiming to be me tried to get another Mac Pro shipped to him (via a legitimate package forwarder) from Amazon. Amazon's customer service was contacted by telephone by the scammer. The scammer identified himself as me to the customer service representative and claimed that the Mac Pro hadn't arrived. The very helpful CS rep offered to replace it, shipping 'me' another computer. Next the scammer called Amazon once again and added his name as another shipping address. Lastly the scammer called Amazon and rerouted the Mac Pro to the new address and was upgraded (for free) to one day shipping. Amazon was emailing me about these contacts with customer service but I had not been checking my email. Once I did look at my email, I contacted Amazon and had the shipment stopped. The scammer subsequently tried several times in the next few days to add his address to my account, once successfully although he was not able to convince Amazon to ship another Mac Pro.
