  • The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector so if someone should trip over it, the cord disconnects harmlessly and your MacBook Pro stays put safely. It also helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.
  • When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector lights up; an amber light lets you know that your notebook is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives you an even easier and more compact way to travel.

While I love most of the design aspects of the MacBook Pro Retina, the MagSafe 2 is an exception. The MagSafe design is theoretically ingenious. But in real-world usage, the product Apple put into production has shown itself to be a poorly designed product. This MagSafe 2 adapter is equally disappointing in durability as the original. While certainly not desirable for a computer you have already spent a fortune on, one can greatly improve this durability by fortifying & strengthening the weakest areas of the MagSafe cord.
-----------------------

THE MAGSAFE DESIGN
Apple introduced the original MagSafe almost a decade ago now, with the MacBook and MacBook Pro from that era. The basic idea is that the adapter head of the power cord is held in place into the computer’s power port using a magnet as the primary means of keeping the connection (rather than friction, which can loosen drastically over time & can make the charger/computer prone to damage if snagged or tripped over.) Theoretically, the MagSafe is supposed to disconnect from the computer PRIOR to the computer or cord being damaged.

Thanks to a symmetrical pin design, both the original MagSafe and MagSafe 2 can be used in either orientation (that is, there is no specific side for ‘this side up’ as either direction works.) Another feature of the MagSafe design is the use of a multi-color LED built into the adapter head, which tells the user when the cable is powered, as well as whether the battery is charging or charged.

The MagSafe powerblocks all have two retractable feet which pop-out to allow the thinner cord to be wound around them.

Bought a Macbook Pro about two years ago.

Was shocked to find that the MagSafe adapter cord starting fraying right at the point where it joined the power brick.

I was even more shocked -- and became very angry -- when I went to the Apple store to read review after review of the same problem happening to other Apple owners. It is very apparent to me that the fraying of the cord is a very common problem.

I wrote a very angry letter to Tim Cook. That letter got forwarded on to Apple Support. I got a phone call from them explaining how to take better care of the cord (how to properly wrap it), but no offer to compensate me for the $80 I had to spend on a replacement that has effected hundreds of other Apple users.

So, the point I am making here is that there is a problem with these cords. They are not made strong enough to withstand normal usage. Apple is doing nothing to improve its manufacturing.

Yes, these work perfectly. However, I would recommend wrapping some electrical tape at the point where the cord meets the brick just to prevent fraying issues.

The cord is great while it lasts but I bought another one (3rd one) cause the last one broke and wire became shredded near the wire head that injects into the computer. This area is very sensitive and prone to breaking and dysfunction. Eventually the position/angle of the wire becomes so temperamental that it only charge in certain positions. I think it makes little sense to harp on here the problems with the Apple proprietary charger, won't do much good.
So I will suggest 2 things that may extend the life of your cable:
(1) Use the plastic clip that is attached to and traces along the cord. Make a loop near the neck of the wire head. Will help reduce shearing stress.
(2) Reduce the constant angular tension pull on the wire that occurs when the wire is dangling from a table/desk. I found something simple and clever on amazon that greatly helped with this problem. I bought "Quirky Cordies Desktop Cable Management for power cords" for $15 and I run my wires through it to keep them organized but mainly for my apple cord so it creates slack and isn't being tugged on constantly like usual.
(2b) So I keep my New/main cord stationary & plugged in at my desk and kept the base part of my old cord that works still and use that as my "Traveling" cord when I'm away from my desk. Thus I don't have to go desk diving to plug and unplug it all the time and just take the top portion with me when I need it along with my old base.

When Apple first introduced the Magsafe Adapter, they had a t-shape. The thinking was, if you accidentally tripped they would come out easily without taking your laptop with them. They eventually switched to an L-Shape, which didn't come out as easily, but was much more flush. For the magsafe 2, they have gone with a thinner design, but have gone back to the t-shape. Here are the advantages and disadvantages I've found.

Advantages:
- Much easier to come out than the L-shape (good for clumsy people like me that sometimes trip over cords, plus I do a lot of work in my universities library, where people are shuffling around desks.
- It's uniform. In some cases, the L-shape could only easily be placed in a certain direction. Often this direction was toward the user (inconvenient and poor planning on the designer of these case's part). With the t-shape, it it removes this inconsistency and makes placement universal.
- No more USB peripheral getting stuck. In magsafe 1, the size allowed for usb devices to accidentally get placed in the magsafe port. The thinner design prevents this.

Disadvantages:
- Doesn't work with older devices. You can't use this magsafe 2 power supply with any magsafe 1 laptops. You can pay $10 and use magsafe 1 power supplies with magsafe 2 laptops, but the reverse will not work.
- The T-design isn't flush. The magsafe 1 l-shape is, while thicker, a much more "sexy" looking connection. This unfortunately adds about half and inch of required space to the left side of your plugged in apple.

Overall:
Hopefully one day they'll make an l-shape magsafe 2 adapter. HOwever, there is nothing physically wrong with this device, it's just not as flush as I'd like. However, function beats form every time, and I haven't found a function that this design fails at, besides conserving space.
