Works some of the time but not well enough,

This review is from: Apple Magsafe Airline Power Adapter MA598Z/A (Personal Computers)
As others have noted, it is very easy to pull out the cord and leave the tip in the power outlet. I almost did so but noticed the tip still plugged in when I reached for an underseat bag.
Did not work at all on a new MacBook with the power settings set to normal wall plug use. The battery died 2.5 hours into a 5 hour flight. The computer gave no warning that the battery was about to fail. The on-screen power indicator was set for "remaining time." The display said "not charging" and did not display remaining time while the green light was on the MagSafe plug. After recharging the battery during a layover, I changed the power display to percentage of battery life rather than time. With the computer plugged into this unit, the percentage fell steadily. I changed the power setting to "Better Energy Savings" and the battery power percentage stayed steady. This use was on an AA 757 and MD-80. Note that you cannot use this product to power any peripherals through a USB port. The price is unreasonably high for this little piece that could not have cost more than a few dollars to make. I'm looking for an alternative. PS: after I posted this I searched for other Macbook airplane power adapters. IGo makes a tip for their products but their web site says Apple does not license the MagSafe system. They can't sell them. So there are NO alternatives. Apple owes its customers who fly a much better product.

This is a simple product with a simple mission...to allow you to use your Apple laptop on a plane without worrying about draining your batteries during long trips. My only qualm is the cord could be a tad longer if the power port isn't right in front of you. (American Airlines customer service verified that SeatGuru.com was correct in where they identified the power ports as being, but it turned out both were off by one row in the back of the plane due a row of seats being added further front, (according to the flight attendant who said she's seen that happen numerous times). I was able to plug into the port in the row ahead of me both going to and returning from the Orient and the cord reached, but with nary a centimeter to spare.) The plug seems durable enough, despite other comments I've read. I personally can't imagine how some can get parts left in the power port, but that is something of which one should be aware as others have reported it. I found the cost well worth the price of not being bored out of my skull for two 14-hour trips, and it was worth it not to have to watch the same in-flight movie multiple times.

I've used the adapter on two transatlantic flights and it works just like it's supposed to. I've been very pleased.

After reading all of the negative comments about this product I purchased two extra batteries along with my new Macbook Pro, as I am a consultant and probably do a dozen or more international flights per year. However, during my recent flight on an American Airlines 777 it worked perfectly fine. Obviously, it will not charge the laptop, but it kept the battery at full charge for a full 11 hour flight while running DVD movies, working in MS Office, etc.
I must admit that I preferred the iGo charger I formerly used with my HP laptop, as I could also charge my mobile phone, iPod, etc. while actually charging the laptop's batteries, but until that becomes an alternative the Apple Magsafe Airline Power Adapter did all that I could ask for.

Does What It Is Suppose To Do,

I can't believe all the bad reviews from people who forget to pull out the tip with the main cord. You had to place the tip on when you first used it. Just look at what you're doing when you remove the cord. I guess it's easy to get in a hurry to get off a plane. You can hot glue the tip in or tape it if you really have an absent mind. The other bad reviews are for car use? It says on the front of the package in large print, MagSafe Airline Adapter. What's with a bad review for it now working in a car? I think those reviews really don't apply.

Would not even give it 1 star but had to or amazon wouldnt let me post. This thing doesnt work on many airlines!! 13 hours between Tokyo and New York and my Mac pro works only 2 hours because I cant use the charger at 85 watts! The plane only allows 75 and your magsafe doesnt work on 777's! This is a modern plane! Get with it provide a solution or you lose me and many business people!

Good, but depends on what airline / type of plane you fly I guess...,

The product works great, and I really love it. I just happened to get in unfortunate situations. I flew Continental... the smaller planes to fly within the U.S. don't even have plug ins (I flew from Minneapolis to Newark). Then I flew from Newark to Zurich, and the seats had the plug-ins, but for some reason mine and my husbands' next to me didn't work for some reason, although the green light was on saying they were working.. no power. We had to ask the people in front of us, and the cable was long enough so I could have it plugged in between their seats and power my Macbook.
On the way back from Zurich to Newark, our seats didnt have any power plug ins at all. I guess only certain sections of the plane do. I guess when you make your reservations, you might want to require a seat with power plug ins just to make sure. Great product, definately worth it.

NO OUTLETS,

YES the PROBLEM is almost NO airplanes have a place to plug this in. The ONLY time I ever saw one was on United Biz class from Japan BUT of course I didn't have the thing with me. My feeling is if you need more than one battery you are computing too much. Shut er down and have a drink you geek.
BUT/HOWEVER it seems to work in the car.

Two faulty units,
This review is from: Apple Magsafe Airline Power Adapter MA598Z/A (Personal Computers)
I would have given this unit a "1", but I believe this unit will work ok. However the two cables I received were faulty. Not a good start. They would work as long as I tweaked the wire at the base of the magnet portion. Otherwise it didn't work. I am trying a third one soon, wish me luck...

Don't Forget the Tip,

The product does what it says. I would give it a higher rating if the design was better- you have to plug the cord into the tip and it is very easy to leave the tip in the outlet when you are unplugging it. I did it on the second trip and now it is useless because you cannot get a replacement tip.
