4.0 out of 5 stars Teaching with Heart and Caring, March 27, 2001

This review is from: An Apple for My Teacher: Twelve Writers Tell About Teachers Who Made All the Difference (Paperback)
An Apple for My Teacher is a book that helps students and teachers alike realize their importance to one another. The tweleve stories included show what makes a good teacher and how influential a figure a teacher is/can be in a student's life. I enjoyed reading about the various ways and the different types of teachers that influenced these writers. Surprisingly not all of the writers chose teachers that were a 'traditional' teacher nor did they all choose teachers who specifically taught english. The only problem with the book is that it seems dated because most of the authors went to school many years ago. It would be good to have a 'newer' version of this book. Even though the time frame is a bit old the feelings and experiences presented in this book are still relevant today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Writers thank teachers, November 20, 2010

This review is from: An Apple for My Teacher: Twelve Writers Tell About Teachers Who Made All the Difference (Paperback)
As I had to give a talk about the influence of good teachers, I read
this book in search of good quotations and anecdotes by writers about teachers who had influenced their careers. It was not the
best source for that, although I still like it that when Kim Novak
said she had been doing a lot of reading and was asked what, for
instance, she'd been reading? Her response: Mostly poetry and prose. And John Barth chose his own wife as teacher. I thought the
book useful in general but not for a speaker looking for pithy remarks.
