Book Description

October 7, 2004
What could be a more fun and delicious way to celebrate American culture than through the lore of our favorite foods? That's what John T. Edge does in his smart, witty, and compulsively readable new series on the dishes everyone thinks their mom made best. If these are the best-loved American foods-ones so popular they've come to represent us-what does that tell us about ourselves? And what do the history of the dish and the regional variations reveal?

There are few aspects of life that carry more emotional weight and symbolism than food, and in writing about our food icons, Edge gives us a warm and wonderful portrait of America -by way of our taste buds. After all, "What is patriotism, but nostalgia for the foods of our youth?" as a Chinese philosopher once asked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curious about pie and the people who make them..., January 10, 2008
Mr. Edge crossed the country in search of the perfect apple pie and how it connects to the people who bake them. He found many more bad pies than good. Fortunately, he shares with us the highlights of his journey. His stories affirm that great apple pie is as rich and varied as the (American) people who bake them. I started baking pies because, 1. fresh pie is so great, 2. nobody else would make them for me, and 3. commercial pies are too sweet and mushy. The Apple Pie book tells me that I am not alone as a snob of the not-so-fancy apple pie. Thank you Mr. Edge for finding all these pie bakers, for telling their stories, and for sharing their recipes.

This book is a quick, fun read. I was paging through it last night, and now I have an itch to do a cross-country road trip. My first stop will be for one of those apple pie shakes in Iowa City... or maybe I'll drive out there (229 miles from here) this afternoon. I was with Mr. Edge the whole way, elated with the pies that lived up to their billings, and disappointed in those which, well, didn't. Any book that makes me want pie badly enough to consider making one from scratch is a pretty good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining insights into apple pie., August 13, 2011

This review is from: Apple Pie (Hardcover)
I liked this books about apple pie. The author takes the reader on a coast to coast romp in a quest to learn the true meaning of the most iconic of all fruit pies. The writing style is evocative and insightful. When the subject is an apple pie of note, a recipe follows; giving the reader a chance to create the same sensory experience as the author. You will have to read the book to know what I am referring to here: I yearn for the day I can purchase a chili infused apple pie at my local truck stop. Overall a fun, well written book.
