About the Author

Michael Wohl is best known as one of the principal designers of Final Cut Pro, a role he held for more than five years. He has also had success as a director and editor for more than 15 years. Michael is also the author of Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Editing Techniques in Final Cut Pro 5 (December 2005) and Advanced Editing Techniques with Final Cut Pro (September 2003)

More About the Author

Michael Wohl is an award-winning filmmaker and author of twelve books on storytelling and post-production with Final Cut Studio. He currently teaches at UCLA and has also taught and designed curricula at AFI and San Francisco State. He has taught more than 300 seminars and sessions at film festivals and tradeshows around the world including Sundance, SXSW, DV Expo, NAB, IBC, Interbee Japan, MacWorld Paris, and many others.

Michael is well-known as one of the original designers of Apple's Emmy Award-winning Final Cut Pro software. As a member of the original team, he worked alongside the engineering team providing the perspective of the real-world editor, focusing on workflow, usability, and interaction design. He produced the original training and demo materials used for the first several Final Cut Pro releases, administered the original beta program, and initiated the in-house editor program.

I found this book very useful and have only one minor point to comment on that I disliked, and that was the recycling of chapters from other Peach Pit books. In particular the one on Advanced Compositing was almost straight from the book on Effects and Color Correction.

That aside I found some very useful tips and tricks and a little more explanation of the audio filters than other books; most of which seem to say - hey use Soundtrack Pro it has better effects - which is true, but I find there are times I need to just quickly sweeten the audio and dont' want to bounce in and out of Soundtrack to do this - now I can finally get my head around the compressor/limiter effect in FCP and use it successfully.

Oh, and there is a small error on page 257 applying filters chapter with labelling images for "auto select" - they are around the wrong way.

All up, I'm glad I bought the book as it helped fill in a few gaps, as well as clarify things and would recommend it for FCP users who have mastered the basics and seek to do more.

This is a great book. I'm happy I purchased this one last in the series because it is very advanced and I would have been lost had I purchased this one first. If you are quick to understand something about FCP than by all means get this one first, either way you will be happy you purchased it. The short cut methods of doing things are well worth it and I'm not talking about keystroke short cuts. This book opens up new was to do everything from replacing clips to matching them. The lessons begin in chapter one.

I purchased this book and jumped right into it. I was amazed at all the things I was learning after using FCP for so long. This book is not for the new user, please don't get me wrong if you want it buy it, however if you don't know FCP buy this one after you purchase Getting Started with Final Cut Studio also in the Apple Pro Training Series. This book has all the tricks of the trade. Love it.
