Shake 4 is a world-class compositing package, but it's also complicated. And sometimes you just need to know how to get around a great piece of software fast. The Shake Quick-Reference Guide is a compact little book that includes every cheat-sheet and quick-glance table a professional visual effects artist could hope for. The book includes a concise explanation of the Shake 4 interface, workspace, and various views and tools, plus at-a-glance summaries of everything from the Color tab (including all those Operators and Correctors) to the Transform tab. It also includes handy tips such as how to access Shake commands from the Terminal, and a Basic Keying Survival Guide. An indispensable reference for visual-effects studios.

This is a great quick way to understand the basic functions of the various nodes in shake esp when you are new to the software. If you want to dig through the 1000 page user manual when your learning the basics, go ahead, but if you to cut the fat and get a basic understanding this book is right for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars quick, concise, January 19, 2006

An expensive but necessary little book. There's really nothing else on the market that shows expanded views of the (deep, very deep) Shake interface. Damian Allen ought to be commended for so clearly mentioning on page 3 how the Unix-based browser and $HOME works. I couldn't find my desktop in Shake till he explained it and had nobody to ask. Thanks! Looking forward to Allen's next Pro Training volume.
