Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6 While tracing the development of an apple tree from bud to fruit, Schnieper also follows the progress of an apple tree through the four seasons. Although the book focuses on a single tree's progress, information about other living things is also presented, thus providing an overview of life in an orchard. Beautiful full-color photos and black-and-white line drawings highlight and elucidate the text. An excellent explanation of grafting is also included. Apples: How They Grow (Houghton, 1979) by Bruce McMillan is for the same age range. However, McMillan's book is illustrated throughout with black-and-white photos. The Apple and Other Fruits (Morrow, 1973; o.p.) by Millicent E. Selsam also follows the development of an apple, but does not provide as much detail as Schnieper's book. Barbara B. Murphy, Shaler Area School District Libs . , Pittsburgh
