Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Apple's Thunderbolt cable enables you to connect a Thunderbolt-compatible Mac with Thunderbolt-equipped peripherals such as hard drives, displays, video capture devices, and more. Thunderbolt technology supports blazing-fast data transfer with two independent channels of 10 gigabits per second (Gbit/s) each. The Thunderbolt cable can also be used for Target Disk Mode between two Macs that support Thunderbolt. It measures 2 meters in length (78.75 inches).

Compatible Apple Computers

MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini (2011 release and later)

Revolutionary Thunderbolt Technology

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O (input/output) technology delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions. The Thunderbolt port allows you to connect to new Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals as well as existing USB and FireWire peripherals using simple adapters. You'll be able to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, and you can daisy-chain up to six high-speed devices without using a hub. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

Next purchase will be a Thuderbolt enabled backup disk, since those will be zippy and fast. RonAnnArbor  |  2 reviewers made a similar statement
Sounds expensive, but there are electronics in the cable, It is not just a cable. jimbo1mcm  |  1 reviewer made a similar statement

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and efficient October 30, 2011

This is a must-have accessory if you are planning to use any of the Mac thunderbolt features.

I used mine first to run migration assistant from my Macbook Pro (2011) to my Macbook Air (2011) and it took less than 30 minutes to copy over what normally takes 3-4 hours using firewire, or 8-10 hours using ethernet cables.

Next purchase will be a Thuderbolt enabled backup disk, since those will be zippy and fast.

At either rate, it's the only choice you have since there are no licensed third party thunderbolt cables.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Apple a day April 1, 2012

This cable and the Thunderbolt technology are an amazing step forward in file transfer.

For several years I shot and edited broadcast video for a living. I've used USB, Firewire 400 and 800, as well as ethernet cable to make the transfer of large uncompressed and unforgiving files. Thunderbolt is so much faster that I don't have exact ratios but guess it is about 10-times faster than my preferred methods of Firewire 800 and ethernet.

Wish there were more storage options.

I used this cable to run a SuperDuper clone backup from a 2011 MacBook Air to a 2011 Mac Mini in under 30-minutes. Previous clones had been stamped from that MBA to USB drives and Firewire 800 connected machines at over 3.5 hours. So, I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend you buy one if you have the Thunderbolt ready devices. If you edit video, step up your game and go from pushing cement trucks around to using a jetpack.

The cable ends get a little warm, but that's probably 'cause these things are hot!

3.0 out of 5 stars High Quality but Over Priced October 16, 2012

Cable works just as expected. It is too expensive though for what it offers. The cable is very stiff which makes storage and portability difficult. Only having one length really stinks. It would be nice to be able to get this in like a 6" length to keep in a bag as many Thunderbolt devices are meant for portable storage and who really wants to carry around a 6ft cable that is hard to wind up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Genuine Apple Thunderbolt Cable June 3, 2012

If you need a Thunderbolt cable this genuine Apple cable is the one to get. If it is important enough to go for Thunderbolt speed then it is worth getting the Genuine Apple cable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works but expensive! November 13, 2012

I use this cable to connect a G-Raid drive to my Macbook Pro retina. No issues with performance but $50 for a simple cable seems way more expensive than it needs to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Exactly As Expected August 10, 2012

In my case I am using this Thunderbolt cable to connect a MacBook Pro (15", I think it's a mid-2011 model) to a mid-2011 iMac (21.5"). Both systems have Thunderbolt built-in. Target Display Mode has worked fine so far. I haven't noticed any flickering or refresh problems. Response seems perfect.

In my opinion the cable is a bit overpriced even though it includes electronics. I'd have been more comfortable paying around $25 but it offers just enough convenience that I decided to spend $50 for it. Now I can use my personal iMac as an extended display for my work system when without needing to setup another monitor somewhere else in the house (I often do work that is more efficient when using two displays).

At this time I don't have any other devices that support Thunderbolt.

There are plenty of reviews below leaving great praise for the Thunderbolt cables Apple makes. They're not *fanboy* posts, these truly are the best cables.
I purchased another brand (i'm not going to bash them directly), needless to say It had a hard time delivering the 10gbps throughput. I have two thunderbolt displays on my other systems here in the office, I used both of them
with a Pegasus Raid controller and notice horrible transfer speeds (MBP ->Monitor->G-Drive->Monitor->Pegasus). I notices had the Pegasus at the end of the chain and was noticing extremely slow transfer speeds. Given that Thunderbolt was designed to be used in this manner, I was a bit disappointed. I switched over to the Pegasus directly to the system and tested speeds, then tried the Apple cable and tested speeds. The Apple cable was consistent, I notice that the 3rd party cable had transfer rates that varied as much as 40%. It's possible I had a bad cable, as such i'm not bashing them by brand here, but In the end as it wasn't really cheaper, I decided to stick with the Apple Thunderbolt cables.

In summary, tried Apple and 3rd party cables, Apple was consistent in transfer speeds and the other wasn't. I've attached a pic showing the apple cables hanging off of a G-Drive Thunderbolt raid.Apple Promise Pegasus 12TB R6 RAID System with Thunderbolt Port, for Mac.
