5.0 out of 5 stars MacOSX Dir. Svcs. - Great learning and reference manual
I'm still tearing into this book but, so far, it seems to very much have the 'under the hood,' in depth information that I was looking for. I will certainly continue to purchase items from this collection of Apple resources and from this vendor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors and problems
The other books I own from this publisher are very good, but this one looks like it was hurried to press and not properly proof-read.

Examples of errors:

on page 51 is a command for creating groups in the directory called "dseditgroup", and the text reads

"dseditgroup -o -create ..."

there is no hyphen before "create."...

This is pretty minor, but more frustrating are the situations in which the author simply skips over some critical information, such as on page 32 when he mentions user record templates. He tells us what should be in there, but doesn't tell us what format this template should be in, the syntax to use, etc.

This stuff needs to be corrected in the next edition for sure.

This title is absolutely worth every penny. From Open Directory to Active Directory, to a healthy combination, this book is well written, well organized and obviously painstakingly combed over. The excursuses are well thought out and the text contains thorough coverage of the topic that is unparalleled. This book will remain on my bookshelf for a long time to come (until it is updated to 10.7 at least)!
