3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story
I enjoyed the story, but I was torn between a 3 or 4 star rating because parts of the story were somewhat unbelievable in real life. Maybe Ms. Tilles used fantasy (and creatively) to conclude her story. It's the story of a young woman and her battle to fit in society and be happy. I DO RECOMMEND this book to read. I read it in 1 day. It keep me turning the pages. I don't want to give away her storyline, because readers who buy the book will definitely enjoy reading Ms. Tilles' story. Ms. Tilles is a talented author who has sparked my reading and I will read her other novels. I like her writing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Never to late to turn a new leaf!, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
Good Read! Apple Tree is a story about two sisters Jalisha and Corine and their prositute mother Camille. Brought up in Washington, DC Jalisha and Corine witness thier mother sleeping around with random men for a living.

With no morals being given by their mother, the sisters end up following in her footsteps by selling their bodies just to get by. Tragic events take place that will have you feeling sorry for Jalisha and Corine.

But after all the drama and sadness, God Blesses those who change their life for the better.

Very good ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's all in those 'jeans', July 25, 2008
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
The last thing Jalisha wanted to be was Camille, her trick-turning mother. But when she was forced into Camille's way of life at the young age of ten, Jalisha grew up believing that prostitution was the only way to make that money.

Jessica Tilles is a phenomenal writer and as soon as I began reading this story I was hooked, immediately cheering for Jalisha and her sister Corine to beat the odds and NOT follow in Camille's stiletto steps.

Though I longed for more of Camille's drama, I must say I enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who understands that the real world isn't always sugar and spice and everything nice.

Once you read Jessica Tilles, you'll forever be a fan!

3.0 out of 5 stars IN HER MOTHERS FOOTSTEPS, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
In this story you meet Camille (the mother), Jahlisa & Corine (sisters. This is the story of a mother who is a prostitute and will brings her tricks to the house and her children watch behind closed doors the way their mother makes money. Camille thinks she is doing the best she can, when Camille dies Jahlisa follows in her mothers footsteps tricking to keep her and Corine together. Little does she know that her little sister Corine has a secret of her own and when it comes out nothing in Jahlisa world will be the same.

Although I am a fan of the author Jessica Tilles I was some what disappointed in this novel. I think the story should've had more to it, meaning by some of the things that happened could have been elaborated on more, all in all this was a good story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Trying to Make a Dollar, August 21, 2005
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
Poor Jalisha grew up in an environment that afforded her little chance at becoming a success in life. Her mother, Camille, was a bonifide prostitute who went so far as to bring her tricks into the house, and her younger sister, Corine, was doomed to follow in their mother's foot steps. Jalisha, who turned her first trick at the tender age of 11, appeared to be headed in her family's destructive path until love and grace stepped in her path. With her man by her side and a new career looming before her, Jalisha must make some choices. Will she live the "right" way (i.e., make money in a legitimate fashion)? Can love conquer all, or are we all doomed to be cursed down to the 4th and 5th generation for our ancestors' faults?

Tilles wrote this story with the loving care of an author concerned about the African American community. Without beating on the reader's head, she drives home her message of redemption. I gave the book the above rating for its simplicity. The ending was wrapped up just a little too easily. Considering Jalisha's background, I felt she needed more of a struggle to do right. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about street drama with happy endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of triumph over circumstance, October 1, 2004
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
Author Jessica Tilles, has set the stage yet again for a buckle up thrill ride. This intense novel of two sisters who's love for each other was their strongest bond. 'APPLE TREE' is a story of triumph! Camille, Jalisha and Corine are unforgettable! As with her previous novels 'Anything Goes' & 'In My Sisters Corner',the author steals your attention and locks it down throughout the story. In the midst of all the storms that life can possibly throw your way there is hope! I look forward to all future works from this author and applaud your efforts. Anxiously awaiting the sequel to the first novel "Anything Goes".

Much Respect, Linda Washington-Johnson,

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!!, July 14, 2004

THE FIRST BOOK I READ BY THIS AUTHOR WAS "IN MY SISTERS' CORNER" AND I KNEW AFTER I READ THAT, THAT I WAS HOOKED ON THE AUTHOR AND THEN I PURCHASED "APPLE TREE" AND THEN HAD TO SPREAD THE WORD AS WELL AS THE BOOK. THIS BOOK TAKES YOU ON AN ADVENTURE OF TWO SISTERS AND A MOM WHO HAS NO RESPECT FOR HERSELF AS WELL AS HER DAUGHTERS...THAT'S JUST TO SUM IT UP A LITTLE BUT THE BOOK IS REALLY GOOD AND YOU(READERS) WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK JESSIE, AFTER READING YOUR BOOKS MY SISTERS SAID YOU HAVE THEM HOOKED FOR LIFE. AS MARTIN WOULD SAY, YOU GO GIRL!!

5.0 out of 5 stars COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN, June 24, 2004
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
I have read many books, but this book was RAW and REAL! Every chapter I was like: DAG! I CAN'T BELIVE IT! DAG! I enjoyed Jessica Tilles way of putting in both the expected (sisters helping each other) and the unexpected. There is one character that I HATED!!! You will discover who I am talking about. I think this story would make a good movie/soap opera. The main character has to overcome barriers in the world and within herself. If you are interested in the erotic -- there is plenty of material here for you to sink your teeth into! HOT HOT HOT. The action is on a par with ZANE!! Now, some of the erotica can be disturbing for the innocent and uninitiated. This book is about a young girl, but it is not a book for children.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRAVO.....AGAIN...BUT WHO IS SUPRISED????, June 22, 2004
This review is from: Apple Tree (Paperback)
Once again, Jessica Tilles keeps you up all night reading this book! I was late for work trying to finish this book in one sitting! The pages kept turning and I kept on saying...OK after this page, I am going to turn the lights out..NOT! It is easy reading, keeps you intrigued, and is imaginative (whew I wish I had an imagination like that lol). How often do people identify with their mothers? A mother is the shaper of children...nations....a world. When I read this I was reminded of the poem: "A Child Lives As They Learn." You always hear "a chip off the ole block." Jessica captured this and Yes indeed although the "Apple Does Not Fall Far From the Tree," at least the fruits of Jalesha's labor do not go in vain. She always had a good heart and wanted better for herself and Corine. I am a sucker for happy endings and this was a great ending. True love prevails as well as the underlining theme of family does also. Great Job Jessica Tilles.... I also think it is so great that you cleverly give us a taste of your next book at the end of your current book. Whew..AM I GOING TO BE ABLE TO STAND THE "SWEET TASTE OF REVENGE?"
