5.0 out of 5 stars A slice of Baduizm, July 9, 2010

This review is from: Apple Tree/Next Lifetime (Audio CD)
Erykah Badu was one of the first artists to open up the neo-soul floodgates in the early to mid 90s. Her debut album Baduizm fused jazz of the 20s and 30s and 70s soul with 90s hip-hop to amazing results. Apple Tree and Next Lifetime are only 2 of the singles released from that record.

The fluid Apple Tree shares some "food for thought" when it comes to making friends and staying true to yourself. "See I picks my friends like I pick my fruit/My Ganny (Grandma) told me that when I was only a youth/I don't walk around trying to be what I'm not/I don't waste my time trying to get what you got/I work at pleasin' me/Cuz I can't please you and that's why I do what I do/My soul flies free like a willow tree/Doo wee doo wee doo wee!" "And if you don't wanna get down with me/Then you don't wanna pick my apple tree!"

Erykah deals with feelings of guilt and confusion after falling for a guy despite the fact that she's already got a man on the laidback Next Lifetime. "See, I know I'm alot of woman/But enough to divide by pie", she tells the man. "Now what am I supposed to do/When I want you in my world?/How can I want you for myself/When I'm already someone's girl?/I guess I'll see ya next lifetime." Very relaxed and just below the surface. Much like most of Badu's work.
