Short summary: I've had this dock at my bedside for a week or so and I am happy with it, but I would not pay a premium over list price for it.

If you have an iPad, you will want a dock. The long charging period for a completely discharged iPad--several hours--means it will be spending a fair amount of time hooked up to the wall and it's nice if it can do something useful then. You should probably get in the habit of putting it in its dock while you sleep. if nothing else you can use the iPad as an expensive photo frame and music player. If the dock is on your desk, then this dock is definitely the way to go as it will make text entry much less stressful--I would not say much faster, as I can type nearly as fast on an iPad virtual keyboard as on a physical keyboard but it takes much more of my concentration to avoid errors, and my hand position is often awkward on the virtual keyboard. Even if the dock is at your bedside, like mine, the keyboard is still useful as I can sit up to dash off quick notes, and also access the line of specialized buttons along the top row to control the device.

The keyboard portion of the dock will work with some iDevices running iOS 4. For example, my 2nd generation iPod Touch works, while my iPhone 3G does not. The docks audio out feature does work with the iDevices I've tried and sounds great. The iPhone 4 will not fit in this dock due to its square profile.

Things to watch out for: You can't use the dock and the Apple branded iPad case. I'd recommend getting another case, as I do not like the Apple one, too bulky and hard to access the controls--I use a lovely Gelaskin to protect against scratches. The dock does not come with a charger module. You will have to buy a separate 10W charger or use the one which came with your iPad.

Verified Purchase
The Good:
It works as advertised.

The Bad (depending your point of view)
- The connector is not long enough to connect iPad with most soft or hard cases. (you could purchase a speck hardshell which has a slit for the dock which in case this would not be a problem)
- The iPad essentially rests on the dock when connected without any clamps. So if it's tilted slightly to the left or right it will not make the right connection to work.

My recommendation is to get a cookbook stand and Bluetooth wireless keyboard because it's vastly more useful. I do want to point out that the wireless keyboard was not build for the iPad so there is one key missing from the wireless which is the home key. That suprising became one my most pushed keys when I used the dock- but still prefered the wireless.

April 7, 2011 edited to add: The price has dropped since I've done this review. It is no longer $90.00.

I'm new to apple products. I just recently bought the iPad and wanted the option of having a regular keyboard......I have to say that this keyboard is awesome! It's not wireless however it also works as a dock. Your iPad charges while connected to it. The only thing that I noticed was that it didn't have a backspace button but I'm not sure whether or not all Apple keyboards have a backspace button because I'm not that familiar with the Apple line of products. I'm used to having a backspace button as well as a delete button and this keyboard only has a delete button so you basically have to move the cursor to avoid deleting the information that you want other than that the keyboard works fine. The only other thing is that your iPad stands completely vertical. There is no way to tilt it so if you're use to being able to tilt a screen for added comfort, you're not able to do that with this keyboard. It takes a bit of getting used to. You also have to use the iPad's original USB cable to connect it.

$90.00 is a little steep for this product. I didn't pay nearly this much for it and I got it brand new. This is marked up really high. Best buy has it for $69.99 and I got mine a little cheaper than that on my local military installation.

For the executive summary, you can skip to the last paragraph of my review. For a more detailed description, I have offered many specifics in the body of the review. The main purpose of this review is to compare this Apple iPad Keyboard Dock to a wireless Bluetooth alternative that I also own. I was on the fence between whether I wanted to use this proprietary Apple keyboard dock or another brand's wireless Bluetooth alternative. I own and enjoy using both keyboards so I offer a comparison between the two models for people weighing the pros and cons between a wireless Bluetooth alternative and this Apple keyboard dock. The wireless Bluetooth keyboard I am comparing this to is the Targus Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard for Tablets - Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy AKB33US (Black). I know Apple (for which there are already over 200 reviews), and other manufacturers, also offer other wireless keyboard alternatives; however, I imagine my comparison would apply to many Bluetooth keyboards and I offer a comparison to one that is new to the marketplace. This is a long review; however, I have simply listed a broad range of features in separate paragraphs with the first word in each paragraph being the feature title in CAPS. I then compared the features of each keyboard so you can scan the list to find a particular feature of interest if you do not want to read the entire review:

SYNCHING: Obviously, this is easy to do with the proprietary Apple keyboard; however, it was not much more difficult with the Targus keyboard. The Targus keyboard has an on/off bottom on the bottom of the keyboard (nice to conserve battery power...
