Find Your Music Faster

Rock and Roll Over
Tilt or turn iPod nano on its side, and you'll listen, watch, and play in new ways. You can flip through your album art with Cover Flow. Or, vertically speaking, see more albums and artists on the screen at one time.

Shake Your Groove Thing
Sometimes, we could all use a little unpredictability. And now you can shake to change your music. Just give iPod nano a shake, and it shuffles to a different song in your music library. You'll always be surprised by what you'll hear.

Let the Games Begin
Now you can get in on games made especially for iPod nano and the accelerometer. They respond to the way you move, so they're immersive, addictive, and a blast. The iPod nano comes with Maze, which lets you work your way through vast mazes by tilting and moving. You can find even more games on the iTunes Store.

Even Your Photos Rock
Pull hundreds of photos from your pocket and share them wherever you go. Hold iPod nano upright and see your photos in portrait view. Turn the player on its side to see them in landscape. Your photos look beautiful in their proper aspect ratio on the vibrant, 320-by-240-resolution display.

11/12/2008 UPDATE:
Apple has released a software update (via iTunes) that will allow the user of a 4th generation iPod nano to disable the Coverflow view (which activates upon tilting the nano horizontally). This was a major gripe for many but a big "thumbs-up" to Apple for resolving this issue.

Note: I'd update the 4G nano's rating from my earlier 2 stars to 4 but Amazon does not allow me to modify that part (is this a glaring oversight by Amazon, or a glitch with my Firefox brower?).

-----

Real world testing was not in Apple's nano 4G design process. Otherwise they would've included an option to disable that idiotic Coverflow so users could make casual adjustments to volume and songs by feel. The nano 4G requires you to orientate it vertically to gain back access to those controls! Not good. Maybe Apple will release a software update to remedy this oversight, but they're notorious for not listening to their customers so I returned my nano 4G to Amazon. Colors are vibrant and beautiful, audio quality is excellent, and it feels great in the hand, but if you want a nano then get the 3G one instead...you'll be much happier.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning - your accessories may not work September 28, 2008
By dick
This nano has two big probems for me. 1. None of my accessories will work with it. 2. There is no nano lanyard solution from apple or from anyone else yet and some are not planning on making one.
I have Logitech MM50 portable powered speakers - fabulous product with 10 hr battery life and a remote. All the prior generations are charged while inserted in the cradle but not the Gen4 nanos. Ditto for older 110V chargers, and for car chargers. I don't know if every product doesn't work but these don't.
Lanyard - The benefit of the nano is its small size. For me a lanyard, hangs around my neck and the in-ear sound isolating buds just reach from my neck to ears - so no cables to get in the way. Inside the shirt it is inconspicuous, outside its jewelry. The spacing between the power plug and headphone plug doesn't match any of the prior nanos - so none of the lanyard solutions work either. For me this is a non starter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lousy Earphones April 18, 2009

First of all, I love my Apple iPod Nano. It is easy to use, sounds great, and has plenty of memory for my music and podcasts.

My complaint is with the earphones that come with this iPod. They are very uncomfortable. I tried to use them for a whole week before I gave up on them. I now use the headphones that came with my old Sony Walkman. They work just fine with the iPod.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive! September 13, 2008
I wanted a nano after selling my iPod a couple of months ago. I didn't use my iPod because I had an iPhone. But sometimes using my iPhone as an iPod for long periods of the day would drain my battery and I didn't want that happening. So i seeked out for a new iPod Nano. Cheaper and smaller was what drew me to the nano. I looked all over to maybe get a good deal on it but decided that I should wait. A couple of weeks later the new nano comes out and WOW. Have you seen the new features? Wow. Apple has almost out done itself. The new design and features are just what blew me away and I had to get one.

I would highly recommend this newly designed iPod Nano. i have the blue one and it's just so cool looking. Love the free games that come with it and everything about it.

Maybe after a few weeks I can have bad things to say about it, but until then...I LOVE IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Nano!!! September 26, 2008
A Kid's Review
When I bought this nano, it is so cool!!!!

Goods
*No hassle syncing to iTunes.
*Cover Flow is great!!
*The battery lasts very long.

Bads
*If you don't put it on hold, and you accidentally turn it left or right, it will automatically turn on and it will show Cover Flow.
*When you put it on hold, and plug in your headphones, it will still turn on.

Overall, this iPod is great!

I recommended checkin' out/buying this nano, if you want a sweet and stylish mp3 player.

1.0 out of 5 stars First time I feel apple has a bad design September 19, 2008
In an attempt to keep the product looking and feeling small, they have curved the case of the new nano. This has resulted in a curved surface for the screen. If there is a direct light source, it is hard to angle the unit in order to view the whole screen without glare.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suits My Needs.. May 22, 2009
I purchased the new nano because I tragically lost my 4GB 3rd gen. nano. :( I probably wouldn't have bought this if I still had my old one, because I don't really think it's so drastically improved that it warrants a new purchase (though it does have more space).

I'm a fairly average type of music listener. While I'm running, walking, waiting for something, etc. I will pop in my earbuds and listen to my ipod. Sound quality is just peachy for someone like me. I can hear it, so that's really all I need. ;P I love the design, ESPECIALLY the fact that the aluminum wraps around the whole thing. That metal backing was the bane of my ipod existence.

The shake to shuffle is interesting, but I don't really use it. However, I haven't had any problems at all with it switching songs on me accidentally. You have to really give it a hard shake to make it switch, so it's not something you're likely to do by accident (and you can turn it off, if you are a very forceful walker/runner).

One thing I really like, and something I haven't seen mentioned much in the reviews for this, is that if your headphones unplug, the song pauses. :) I am very clumsy, and always end up ripping them out on something, and then frantically try to plug it back in quickly. This way, I can just plug it pack, press play, and the song starts where I stopped.

I love the screen size, and the clarity. It's something you REALLY notice when you compare it to an older ipod. My boyfriend has an older nano, and WOW does my screen look good. ;P It's not totally important for me, because I don't really watch shows or movies on it, but it's very clear for those who do.

Genius is also something I REALLY love.

Review from Wired.com: 4th Gen iPod nano -- We Want Our Square Form Factor Back!
Read the full 4th Gen iPod Nano review at dpreview.com
Here's a hard truth: Even if Apple decided to carve its new nano out of petrified poo and bless it with a Braille display, the interface alone would still make Cupertino's latest flash-based music player leagues better than the competition. So what's our opinion of the new nano? Well, it's just like the old nano, just a little roomier (fine) and shaped like an airfoil (weird). This new aerodynamic form doesn't seem to have any discernible functional purpose, but the Triscuit-shaped nano had some distinct advantages over this new 4th gen model: It was a better piece of fitness gear, fitting more comfortably into sporty armbands and the tiny pockets so common to the backs of running shorts. The old screen orientation also allowed you to control video content more intuitively, though the new elongated shape is better for navigating long playlists. Sure, that’s a decent upgrade--as is the price-to-gig ratio--but unless you absolutely need to shake-to-shuffle (spazz) or will be building an airplane out of iPods (paging Mr. Branson), the best thing about the new nano is how flooded eBay’s gonna be with cast-off 3rd gen models. Is the 4th Generation Nano battery life really that bad?
Sorry to say, in my experience, yes, it really is! It is so bad, in fact, that even though I can not return it with my receipt, because more than 30 days have passed, I may try to plead with Apple to let me trade it in for some credit on a Classic, if Classic batteries are any better.

Any way to turn cover flow off?
I just spoke with an Apple rep as I am also frustrated with Cover Flow. He said to:
(1) plug my ipod into my computer / iTunes
(2) go to my nano's Summary page (where you can see the storage space or refresh the unit, etc)
(3) click on the Music tab
(4) uncheck Display Artwork
-- I hope that...

I highly recommend using Apple's support site (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/) rather than asking Amazon users. Most don't actually know what they're talking about.
