2.0 out of 5 stars Apple's Misstep
I have been a loyal user and fan of Apple products for many years, but the new Shuffle is a disaster from an ergonomic and usability standpoint. Moving all the controls to the earbuds is the problem. First, you have to use Apple earbuds to control the device and my ears don't "fit" well with them. Second, it is not easy or convenient to use the controls where they are...

NO complaints .

I have been a loyal user and fan of Apple products for many years, but the new Shuffle is a disaster from an ergonomic and usability standpoint. Moving all the controls to the earbuds is the problem. First, you have to use Apple earbuds to control the device and my ears don't "fit" well with them. Second, it is not easy or convenient to use the controls where they are situated. Finally, the controls had a tendency to malfunction (stop working, doing random things, etc) after they had been in use for 30 minutes or more. I got a new set of earbuds from the Apple store but problems continued. So I returned the new shuffle and have asked Santa to get me a 2nd or 3rd generation Shuffle. It is actually hard to believe that Apple built this product it is so unusable. Feels like it should have been built by Microsoft around the time that Vista was launched!

1.0 out of 5 stars Shuffle v4, November 23, 2009

I have v1 Shuffle; I was going to buy one of the new shuffles but didn't like the idea of the requirement to use Apple's headset.. I have my own headset that is perfect for cycling and running; i.e short cord that doesn't get in the way.. After reading previous reviews, there is no way I will buy the v4 shuffle... Apple really screwed up on identifying a significant portion of their target market for Shuffles, outdoor sports... Duh!

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest thing to happen after the iPod touch!, October 14, 2010

I got this as a gift about a month ago and despite all the negative reviews, I am proud to say that I love my shuffle! The fact that it's so tiny and practically has no buttons except for the essential ones like "on and off" and "shuffle or play in regular order" feature. I still don't see why you would want so many buttons on a shuffle if you're going to be running around at the gym. (Miscellaneous buttons like play/pause/etc would be distracting and cause one to trip and fall onthe treadmill. Ouch!) Accessing these buttons from the headphones make it simple. (;

If buttons are a need for you, then an iPod nano/classic is the right mp3 for you.

It would've been helpful to have some instructions on how to set up the ipod. I am not a kid who just knows, I am a middleaged woman who just wants music while I work!!

If you are looking for a player to excercise with, this thing is awful. First of all, the track changer and volume adjust are on the headphone wire, so you have to reach up almost to your ear to adjst them. That, of course, is if you can adjust them. PLEASE TRUST ME AND THE OTHER REVIEWERS when we say that you can not change the tracks (i.e skip forward or go back) or the volume if this thing comes into contact with any water (i.e. sweat). I tried to use this to run twice, and it didn't work either time. I ended up spending $20 less on an MP3 player that is designed for runners that works very well so far. Don't waste your time, just buy another (i.e. better) product.

Scosche tapSTICK Polycarbonate Case with Integrated Controls for iPod shuffle 3G, 4G (Black)

Since I couldn't take back my IPod. I bought this and it seems to work well. And it's a lot better than having to use there headphones and I still have the control of the volume and the other features.

I've read all the reviews giving this device a low rating. That has not been my experience. I have an Ipod Classic with the Bose speakers for the house but found the classic inconvenient to take outside. My wife wanted something to take to the gym so I got her the 4 GB Shuffle. It works well for her and I liked it so much I got one for myself. I got the Belkin adapter to use it in our cars and it works great through the auto sound system. I love the control system. No need to look at some device while changing playlists or skipping tunes while driving. Easy to reach while using the headphones. The only downside is the adapter places the controls near the device when using other headphones so the controls may be less convenient to reach depending on where the device is placed. Hopefully the aftermarket suppliers will catch up with that.

4GB holds a lot of music but I have more than that in Itunes so when installing set it to manually manage music. Also check the box "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". When it starts to get cluttered I just delete all the playlists and music. Then I drag the playlists from Itunes to the device. A new playlist appears in the Shuffle and Itunes chases down the appropriate music and loads it. Nothing to chase down and double check.

This is the perfect portable music player. No goofy armbands. It's so incredibly small and light I just drop it in a pocket or clip it anywhere convenient.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Apple Product for Running and Working Out, December 13, 2009
This review is from: Apple iPod shuffle 4 GB Green (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL (Electronics)
After using this iPod shuffle extensively for over 6 months, I am still extremely happy and satisfied with it! I run 25-30 miles per week outdoors in Wisconsin, and I tested this product through hot, humid summer days and winter days that are below 20 degrees. It always works great for long runs of 10-20 miles at a time as well! I sweat a normal amount, and I have NEVER had a problem with sweat getting into the headphones or shorting anything out. Unless you are a heavy sweater or live in extremely humid conditions, I do not believe you will have problems with anything like this, as some reviewers have been complaining of.

I also find the controls easy to use. The spot near my neck on my headphones where the control buttons are took me about a week to get used to, and now I love it. Pressing the middle button once for play or pause, twice to skip to the next song, three times to go back a song, and then pressing and holding down to hear the name of the song and the artist and then continuing to hold down to switch playlists was also something that took me about a week to get used to. It is definitely worth it to gain the ability to have multiple playlists and the small size and weight of this item! As someone who likes to participate in races for fun, I love the compact size and weight of this shuffle as it doesn't slow me down at all on long runs! Having run with the previous brand of shuffle and various generations of the Nano, you really notice the difference in how this new shuffle clips on the bottom of a shirt or jacket, and one can't even feel that it's there throughout a multi-hour workout! It's also so convenient to have various playlists on this shuffle so that I can mix up the music I listen to so that I don't get bored with it and also have different playlists for different kinds of training days. I never have to mess with worrying about syncing my shuffle now to fit my workouts every day!

I have also used this shuffle while biking, lifting weights, hiking, and trail running. It's always a pleasure to use!

As someone who is comfortable with the basic headphones all iPods come with, I don't mind that you can't pick any headphones you want to while using this shuffle. However, I know a lot of people are very particular about their headphones, so this is definitely a defect with this product if the Apple headphones don't work for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for workouts, May 28, 2010

I don't understand the terrible reviews this version of the Shuffle is receiving. I wanted a tiny, simple iPod to play music while I work out. Bada bing. It's a bummer that the earphones are so specialized, but I'm sure there will be competitive compatible earphones available shortly. Until then, I have a feather-light music player that clips to my clothes and carries around a thousand songs while I exercise. I've had this Shuffle for half a year now, work out with it at least 3 times a week, and have never had an issue with it. If you need to constantly jump around in your music selection, this is not the iPod for you. But if you want an iPod you can clip to any article of clothing and forget about, the Shuffle is it.
