This worked fine with my Apple MacBook Pro MD101LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (which is the version that first came out in mid-2012) When I went to the Apple store the other day, there was nothing listed as the "newest version" (and it wasn't printed on the box I received from Amazon.) Perhaps this is a designation Amazon has to note as a reseller.

There is a code in the box that you register with the serial number of the Mac on the apple website. It's very self explanatory once you get it

Yes. I called Apple and they told me that as long as the Applecare plan is listed with Amazon itself as the Seller the plan is honored by Apple when it is registered.
