Product Description

AppleWorks 6 is a productivity program that works the way people think and work. It combines six core capabilities: word processing, page layout, painting, spreadsheet, database, and now presentations into one easy application. By seamlessly integrating these capabilities with Apple's QuickTime digital technologies, AppleWorks 6 makes it effortless to incorporate text, spreadsheets, digital photos, images, sounds, and movies in a single document.

AppleWorks 6 works with images and photos in any of the following file formats: EPS, PICT, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, FlashPix, MacPaint, Photoshop, PICS, PNG, Kodak Photo CD, and more. The following sound file formats are supported: AIFF, AU, Audio CD, Wave, Law, MIDI, MPEG-1, and MP3. The following video file formats are supported: AVI, DV, Macromedia Flash, and QuickTime Movie.

This is a collection of essential and powerful writing and creativity tools, including a word processor, a database, a spreadsheet, plus drawing, painting and a new presentation component.

This current version is much better than any previous version of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks as long as its running on a Mac (we have yet to test or see the Windows version, promised "Fall 2000"). It sets the standard for power, grace and ease of use and would be an ideal word processor for children starting in about 2nd grade. In fact, Microsoft Office 98 weary Mac owners should take note of the fluid integration of the essential components. Want to drop a drawing in your report? Just cut, paste and it happens-just the way it should be. How about a quick pie graph to go with that spreadsheet? Simple. Also amazingly easy is the process of making reports into web pages or presentations. Missing are the dumbed down "wizards" or slippery preferences found in Microsoft Office.

Before you run out and buy this program, you should know that AppleWorks 6.0 has one key weakness. It is not able to digest any Office files, which has become the standard in many cases. This means that if someone sends you a Word file, you're out of luck unless you can open the file with AppleWorks 5.0 (or ClarisWorks) which does have the ability to open Office documents. AppleWorks is able to handle a nice variety of formats for graphics, sounds and video. Keep in mind that in order to get to all the clipart, you'll need a solid, fast web connection.

We'll look forward to comparing the Windows version of 6.0 with Microsoft Office 2000. For elementary age writers, AppleWorks brings a welcome option for both home and school settings.

It's odd to find someone selling AppleWorks 6 in 2014. It hasn't been updated since 2004, and is not designed for today's Macs. It's a shame, because it was reasonably good software in its day.

If you bought your Mac in the last year or two, don't bother buying this software. But if you have an older Mac you *may* be able to use it.

Case in point: I have a Mac Pro which can't run Appleworks. It's an older Mac Pro, circa 2009, using the Snow Leopard operating system. I was able to install Appleworks on it but it crashes frequently and creates conflicts with my other software. So I've found it by and large unusable on that machine. This was a little irksome because I have thousands of files written and formatted in Appleworks, and had no way to open them after it stopped working on my Mac.

Interestingly though, I was able to install it and use it without problems on my Macbook Pro laptop, which I bought in 2010. The MacBook Pro is also running Snow Leopard. I'm still using it successfully on that machine.

If you do decide to take a chance on it, before you will be able to install it, you would first need to install Rosetta (which used to come as part of the older Mac OS. (You can find Rosetta online if you poke around long enough.) But again, don't bother trying unless you're using an older Mac. Best to look for current software instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was fine software in its day December 24, 2014
This was fine software in its day, and I used it to create posters, flyers, café menus, so it paid for itself. The word processor lacked all the bells and whistles found in Microsoft Office, but then, it wasn't bloatware like Office. The thesaurus was better than any I've found on the Web.

Sadly, the last operating system it worked on was Snow Leopard, O/S 10.6.8, so if you have a newer Mac, forget about buying this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Appleworks 6.0 December 3, 2009

We installed an upgrade to our Mac operating system and it would not handle the old appleworks which had all our information from years past. Unfortunately, our new system would not handle 6.0 so we were dead in the water. We have not retrieved the information we had in the old appleworks program. The short of it is, since the program did not load, we have not used it.
