Book Description

This text aims to help children aged four to seven to learn the alphabet and science as they meet Archie and his friends. The authors combine reading and rhyming with simple science activities to create a resource that provides a multidisciplinary approach for the very young. Projects begin with a list of simle, household materials and come with step-by-step instructions. Other activities include making crystals, using salt to experiment with buoyancy, concocting homemade glue, using water to magnify, and more. At the end of the book, science principles are explained for the benefit of adult companions.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?This experiment and discovery book is also an alphabet and poetry book. For each letter, there is a poem related to the science activity or principle on the facing page. Projects include testing the sense of smell, making fingerprints, having fun with magnets, making glue, testing whole eggs to determine whether or not they're cooked, etc. Some of the activities have appeared in many other collections, such as putting celery in colored water and making a xylophone. The presentation is uneven. While some entries are clear and intriguing, others will confuse children because of the brevity of the instructions and/or the small size of the colorful illustrations. Explanations of the scientific principle illustrated for each experiment appear at the back of the book. A C-minus effort.?Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars Great poems and science projects for kindergarten teachers!, January 24, 1999
This review is from: Apples, Bubbles, and Crystals: Your Science ABCs (Paperback)
I just went to the California Kindergarten Conference and saw this book presented. There is a poem and a science project for each letter of the alphabet. They are simple, hands-on experiments and very affordable for the K-1 teacher.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best science experiment book for the under seven set, February 13, 2001
This review is from: Apples, Bubbles, and Crystals: Your Science ABCs (Paperback)
My five year old loves the idea of doing science experiments, so I have purchased three or four science books geared for kids her age. This is the best one that I have seen. The activities are fun and easy to do. Almost all of them require only materials that are readily available in the average household. Most take under half an hour from start to finish. The reason that I gave the book only four stars and not five is that the poems themselves are not great. Bottom line: the science experiments are terrific, but the book is not a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent & fun intro to science for younger kids, May 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Apples, Bubbles, and Crystals: Your Science ABCs (Paperback)
This book is both entertaining and informative. There are very few childrens science books which can capture the attention of a 4 year old, and still relay meaningful science; this book does. All of the experiments have fun poems to go along with them, and there is additional information for more in-depth scientific thought at the back of the book. The experiments are fun and easy to do. Overall, it's an excellent first science book.
