There are approximately 7,500 varities of apple today - approximately 7,453 of them are missing from this little, (it's only 4 X 5 inches), book. But 47 of them are here and they're here in all of their "appley" glory....

One summer Jonathan Gerken set out to buy some apples. He got some from his neighbors, he bought some at local farmers' markets, and others he purchased right at the orchards. And then? Well then he photographed each of them; he cut 'em in half and photographed them again; and then he ate them. That's pretty much all there was to it....

"Apples I Have Eaten" is simply a set of 94 color photographs - 47 whole apples, one to a page, and the same apple cut in half, on the opposite page. There is no text, other than the name of the variety under each of the whole apple photos. And what varieties they are.... Beginning with the deep red, almost purple "Arkansas Black" and ending with the orangey-red and gold "Wolf River" this is a pictorial ode to apples that will delite almost anybody who ever carried a brown paper bag lunch to school. Mr Gerken lets the apples do all the talking - if you take the time to listen, they have a lot to say.

I just love the title, mostly. I was saddened to see that my favorite type of apple, the Pink Lady, was not pictured. Maybe it's not rare enough. Very cute little book anyway, for someone like me who is particular about apple varieties.

I am impressed with the author's choices of apples included in this small book. While The Apples of New York are a must-have for dedicated heirloom apple studies, this pocket-sized reference is just the right book to keep close when out and about. it had to be a magnificently focused task to choose what to include, and what to exclude, yet the author found the perfect balance, in my opinion.

He must have considered that apple identification can be difficult even for the knowledgeable, and decided that this would be a book wherein one could find at least one variety encountered. It's perfect, really. Simply having the book at the ready, (and what better time of year to have it), serves as a bit of encouragement to keep one's eyes peeled, (with apology), for the numerous heirloom apples that remain.
