5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, August 26, 2011
This review is from: Apples and Honey: A Rosh Hashanah Lift-the-Flap (Lift-the-Flap, Puffin) (Paperback)
Apples and Honey is a great book for preschool children and infants. It tells the story of Rosh Hashanah through pictures and commentary. The lift-the-flap concept is a wonderful part of the book and really adds to the story. Joan Holub writes about picking apples, making New Year's cards, getting dressed for synagogue, blowing the shofar, having dinner, and gathering with the family. I notice something new in the book each time I read it. The book never fails to make me hungry for apples and honey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super-loved book, December 5, 2009

This review is from: Apples and Honey: A Rosh Hashanah Lift-the-Flap (Lift-the-Flap, Puffin) (Paperback)
My 2 year old and 3.5 year old love this book... we read it and re-read it about a hundred times in preparation for, and during Rosh Hashanah. Lovely pictures, easy to use flaps. The text is pretty good, or you can talk about the pictures in your own way.

People are wearing kippas, there is a synagogue scene, family scenes...

Make sure you read this book WITH your kids, because it is not a board book - the pages are heavy cardstock , and kids require supervision so they don't rip it.

This review is from: Apples and Honey: A Rosh Hashanah Lift-the-Flap (Lift-the-Flap, Puffin) (Paperback)
My 16-month old daughter absolutely loves this book, and brings it over to my husband or me to read many times a day. The simple descriptions of preparing for the holiday of Rosh Hashanah are easy for her to follow, and the pictures offer so many "talking points" for me to point out while reading together. She loves pointing to the thoughtful details, such as the dog chasing a squirrel while the family is apple picking, the little girl having flour on her nose while preparing a challah, and the dog hiding under the table during the holiday meal (where the little boy feeds the dog from his plate). This book offers a beautiful depiction of a realistic family preparing for and sharing in the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, and can easily be enjoyed both by Jewish and non-Jewish readers. I highly recommend this book!
