5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Study Bible Ever!
I found this Bible to be the best study bible available. It breaks down events and makes you stop and think. It also gives short biographys on many people in the Bible. If you are looking for a great study Bible, you're looking at the right one. I love it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Feels a bit dumbed down. Study notes a bit odd...
Actually, this translation isn't quite as accurate as you might think. In fact, it dumbs things down so much in some cases that it becomes inaccurate. It's fine for most of the Old Testament, but the words of Jesus, hard to interpret, are dumbed down, and the Epistles are even worse. As an example, when Jesus uses hyperbole ("I tell you, in order to be my...

...I own the burgundy bonded leather large print edition and Christ's words are not in red. This is why I can only give it 4 stars. Inclusive language, easy to understand, good maps, tons of in depth notes (a tad conservative, but not nearly as bad as most), very informative book introductions, profiles of many Bible characters, cross references... highly recommended for anyone new to the Bible. (Only The Open Bible comes close--I like larger fonts.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Application Study Bible, New Living Translation Leather, March 5, 2005
This review is from: Life Application Study Bible, New Living Translation Burgundy Bonded Leather (Leather Bound)
If you don't have one, get one. This Bible is the most Beautifully written, Easily understood Bible I have ever read. The Notes and Life Application details are insightful and often bring out meanings that I didn't consider before. The translators have done an amazing job. I recommend this bible to everyone I know. I have a New Living Translation Pocket size New Testament that I carry with me everywhere. Reading that little New Testament is what made me realize I wanted this bigger version. I have been very impressed with how much more the Lord has been able to show me with this bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible, but a times too much translation, July 4, 2001

This review is from: Life Application Study Bible, New Living Translation Burgundy Bonded Leather (Leather Bound)
Outstanding bible for those new to bible reading, however regular readers may find some of the translation unnecessary. I love this translation but at times I found that they over-translated tried and true biblical phrases. Thus the new reader may not ever become familiar to some of the most meaningful verses in the bible. Small complaint but one I feel should be stated.

The Life Application Bible, New Living Translation is one of the most comprehensible and enlightening versions I have encountered. Especially for someone new at Bible reading and looking to get the most out of time spent in Scripture study. Young people, older folks, lay persons or ministers will find a wealth of knowledge, practical guidance and inspiration made clear and concise within its pages. If you enjoy reading the Bible, reading this version will be more than pleasing.

Actually, this translation isn't quite as accurate as you might think. In fact, it dumbs things down so much in some cases that it becomes inaccurate. It's fine for most of the Old Testament, but the words of Jesus, hard to interpret, are dumbed down, and the Epistles are even worse. As an example, when Jesus uses hyperbole ("I tell you, in order to be my disciple, you must hate your mother and father, your brothers and sisters, and yes, even your own life!"), the NLT would translate it rather stupidly ("I tell you, if you want to be my disciple, you must love me more than your mother, father, brothers and sisters."). I'm not saying this type of translation doesn't work, because it does, but I think when you flip it around like that it loses something. What Jesus meant was that your love for him should be so great that, in comparision, your love for others, even your family, would seem like hatred. Your love for Jesus should be so much larger that any other love, in contrast, is small. If you buy this Bible, make sure you also have an accurate translation (NIV, NRSV, RSV) to compare to. Also, the study notes in this Bible, in some cases, sound more condemning than anything. Instead of explaining what is going on, it's constantly telling you how to shape up your life. I suppose it is a Life Application Bible, though, after all. I recommend the Quest Study Bible and the Oxford Annotated Bible over this one.
