I needed a new bible, and I wanted one with study references. A lot of the study bibles are huge. This bible is thick, but it is smaller which is great. It isn't real heavy or bulky. Plus the references, notes, and extra resources in the bible are really good. Since it is a Life Applications Bible there is a lot of info on how the scripture applies to daily life. In addition, its physical appearence is aesthetically pleasing. The black leather is a soft leather and the printed part of the cover is similar to a canvas material. The pages are outlined in silver so it has a nice classic, but at the same time modern, look to it. I am really glad I found it! I love this bible!!

This review is from: Life Application Study Bible NLT, Personal Size TuTone (Imitation Leather)
This Bible was one of my best purchases this year! I own the NIV Life Application, but I have always enjoyed the New Living Translation. The Life Application study notes are wonderful and provide new perspective when reading those passages you've read times before. If you're just beginning reading the Bible, the notes will give clarity to stories, concepts, and characters you may not understand.

I like the two-tone leather and the personal size is very convenient. My only complaint with the personal size is the margins are inconsistent. One page may have a wider top or side margin than the page right next to it. Not a huge problem, but may really bother some readers.

So get the standard size if you need balanced margins, but please consider the Life Application to help you dig deeper.

There is no better study tool than the Life Application Bible!

When the NLT came out with a study Bible? Not so much...

The New Living Translation has always seemed to me to be an underdog of sorts, despite what the publishing houses' marketing committees say about it being one of the most popular translations in the world. Aside from a single professor (no, not the one who was a member of the translation committee itself) who read from it as he opened up each class, I have not heard it used in a public setting, though that is precisely what the editors intended this version to be: a translation that was marked by its read-aloud-ability.

Well, they came out with a study Bible, and I was provided an advanced reader copy, courtesy of Tyndale House Publishers, to review (reviewing a Bible - daunting, I know). For its hefty 2416 pages, the publishers managed to contain it into a relatively manageable size. It is big, compared to the tiny Bible I usually tote around, but not too big. The text that is used is the revisited second addition of the New Living Translation (this new addition, the editorial committee explains, was formed to bring revisions to the text in order to increase the level of textual precision). Replete with all the charts, maps, and diagrams you could ever want, it provides background to the text in an accurate, yet approachable way. The readabililty of the text has been carried over to the notes, which form a blend of background information and application notes. If you are like me, upon reading that this version is in fact the Life Application Study Bible, you probably thought of a thousand terrible sermons in which equally terrible illustrations and applications were given. When the reader begins to sift through the notes, however, it will quickly become evident that this is not the case.

If you've already got a study Bible, don't bother with another. This one is by no means different enough to warrant another purchase and another Bible on your shelf. But if you are looking to get your first, give it a shot. I imagine this version and format would be useful for those in the business of preparing sermons, Bible studies, or working through the Word in their devotions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Study Bible!, November 23, 2007
I was very pleased when I received my Life Application Study Bible NLT, Personal Size. The first thing was the soft feel of the imitation leather and the binding. I have more than 100 Bibles, and the binding of imitation leather like this holds up better than real leather! My daughter and my high school Sunday School class that I teach were impressed by the brown/blue color combination. But as with all Bibles (and people), its what's inside that counts. I am impressed with the study notes, because they give you more than one view (ex. Gen. 1:26) if available and let the reader look to the Holy Spirit for guidance for what to believe. I also loved the Chronology of Bible Events and World Events at the beginning. I have completely read more than 12 different translations, and the NLT is easy to understand for first time readers. I refuse to argue with anyone who only believes one translation, and believe first time readers should read a translation they can understand, and then compare and look to a personal relationship with God to guide their heart. I recommend this Bible, and wish everyone would read scripture every day!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this bible!, October 29, 2009

The NLT version is written in easy to understand English so I look forward to reading this bible. Also the notes on the bottom of every page further clarify what you are reading about, sometimes offering historical background and/or other bits of information pertaining to the scripture. I also like that there are mini biographies throughout the bible on key people, e.g. Joseph, Matthew, Herod, Mary Magdalene, etc. This is a great edition, and I would recommend it to people who are new to the bible or those who want a deeper understanding of it.

Lets face it. For most people reading the Bible can be hard and a chore. This Bible has opened up a whole new world. So many helps, comments, maps it makes it come alive and easily understood. What good is reading the Bible if you can't understand it? This Bible rocks! Buy it!

This Bible is gorgeous, and I can see myself reading this very same Bible many years from now! The NLT is by far the easiest to understand, but it still maintains accuracy which is very important. It's a little thick, but it's really not bad at all! Pretty lightweight. The design is beautiful, which is probably one of the reasons you are looking at this one in the first place right? Well, I bought it and loved it and I think that you will too. The footnotes at the bottom of each page really help me to understand what I am reading and give me practical ways to put the Bible's message into practice.

You should most definitely get this Bible!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bible is very useful but leather melted in my car, November 20, 2008
This review is from: Life Application Study Bible NLT, Personal Size TuTone (Imitation Leather)
This bible is very good looking to the eye and has commentary on the more important verses. My biggest complaint is that last summer, I left the bible in my car and the leather melted to my seat and when I tried to unstick it, it only ruined the bible because the leather stayed stuck to my seat. Now the bible is ugly and the spine came unglued. I was very disappointed. I own a few more bibles that are bigger and bulkier that I don't like carrying to church every Sunday that I leave in my car during the week and none of them have ever had any problems. This is the only bible that's melted in my car, so to me it must be the bible...not the fact that I left it in my car.

I bought this for my girlfriend, and she loves it.

She says it makes it a lot easier to understand the bible.

The imitation leather is as good as the real leather, gives it more modern feel to it.
