Book Description

August 17, 1998 0471176273 978-0471176275 1
A complete, up-to-date textbook on an increasingly important subject

Robust Systems Theory and Applications covers both the techniques used in linear robust control analysis/synthesis and in robust (control-oriented) identification. The main analysis and design methods are complemented by elaborated examples and a group of worked-out applications that stress specific practical issues: nonlinearities, robustness against changes in operating conditions, uncertain infinite dimensional plants, and actuator and sensor limitations. Designed expressly as a textbook for master's and first-year PhD students, this volume:
* Introduces basic robustness concepts in the context of SISO systems described by Laplace transforms, establishing connections with well-known classical control techniques
* Presents the internal stabilization problem from two different points of view: algebraic and state --space
* Introduces the four basic problems in robust control and the Loop shaping design method Presents the optimal *2 control problem from a different viewpoint, including an analysis of the robustness properties of *2 controllers and a treatment of the generalized *2 problem
* Presents the *2 control problem using both the state-space approach developed in the late 1980s and a Linear Matrix Inequality approach (developed in the mid 1990s) that encompasses more general problems
* Discusses more general types of uncertainties (parametric and mixed type) and ??-synthesis as a design tool
* Presents an overview of optimal ,1 control theory and covers the fundamentals of its star-norm approximation
* Presents the basic tools of model order reduction
* Provides a tutorial on robust identification
* Offers numerous end-of-chapter problems and worked-out examples of robust control

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Focuses on robust control, currently a very important topic in control research and engineering. The interest in this area is motivated by the need to achieve greater accuracy and predictability in modern control systems, as are found in aircraft and rocket navigation systems, for example.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most complete overview of Modern Robust Control., February 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Robust Systems Theory and Applications (Adaptive and Learning Systems for Signal Processing, Communications and Control Series) (Hardcover)
This book is a thorough work on the subject of robust control. It covers as they appeared chronologically, the different methodologies for linear robust control design and analisys. From "loop shaping" to structered singular value analisys including H-infinity optimization, the book gives a complete overview with great mathematical rigour and very clear explanations. Other topics included in the book are "model order reduction" and "robust identification", a subject only treated in journal articles this far as it is a very recent area of research. Problems and a complete chapter with examples are included.

5.0 out of 5 stars The textbook my professor forgot, April 28, 2004

This review is from: Robust Systems Theory and Applications (Adaptive and Learning Systems for Signal Processing, Communications and Control Series) (Hardcover)
This book is explaining all the topics not addressed at all in the textbook for my Control Systems Design course (Franklin, Powell, Emami-Naeini). The presentation is at a graduate level and assumes a course in Linear Dynamic Systems. The authors provide extensive real-world examples throughout while consistently presenting a Theorem, Proof explanation of modern control systems design and analysis. An appendix explains the neccesary math background one should have in brief. The approach is broad and still precise. I only hope the authors produce another edition, since they are so successful at bringing modern literature and research into one concise text. High accolades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, October 9, 2008

This review is from: Robust Systems Theory and Applications (Adaptive and Learning Systems for Signal Processing, Communications and Control Series) (Hardcover)
Arrived promptly and in great shape. The text is well written and an excellent reference for systems. This is not a good introductory text to the subject.
