Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Innes's Paint Magic (Pantheon, 1987) was one of the first books to explore the art of decorative painting and has become a classic. Here Innes describes various decorative techniques divided into four well-illustrated sections: raw surfaces such as stucco and concrete; applied surfaces including decoupage and shellwork; color pigments and washes showing historical color palettes; and finishing that includes lacquer and waxes. The historical perspective provided for all finishes makes this much more than a how-to book. Together with Innes's follow-up New Paint Magic (Pantheon, 1992), this is a perfect companion to her original work and belongs in all collections. Libraries that have noted a demand for books on decorative painting may want to consider also Lee Andre and David Lipe's Decorative Painting for the Home: Creating Exciting Effects with Water-Based Paints (Sterling, 1994).

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful information about natural, ancient techniques, June 11, 2000
This review is from: Applied Artistry: A Complete Guide to Decorative Finishes for Your Home (Hardcover)
Ms. Innes' quest for the origins of many of the finishes and techniques that have been in use since ancient times has resulted in an excellent resource for design professionals and decorative artists alike. The recipes for such esoteric materials as gesso, limewash and marmorino make this book worth the price. I have not found another book to compare with it. The projects are not for the faint of heart but are acheivable and are useful in grasping the fundamentals of each of the techniques.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Applied Artistry: A Complete Guide to Decorative Finishes for Your Home (Hardcover)
I must say the techniques that WERE given in this book were well done, but half of the book is historical with photographs and there was definitely a lack of actual techniques.
