Book Description

047086172X 978-0470861721 September 11, 2006
The weather can be a cause of disruption, despair and even danger everywhere around the world at one time or another. Even when benign it is a source of constant fascination. Applied Atmospheric Dynamics connects this interest with the theoretical underpinnings of fluid dynamics; linking real physical events as diverse as Hurricane Katrina and the strong katabatic winds of Antarctica, with quantitative conceptual models of atmospheric behaviour.

Assuming only basic calculus the book provides a physical basis for understanding atmospheric motions around the globe as well as detailing the advances that have led to a greater understanding of weather and climate.

The accompanying supplementary CD-ROM features colour graphics, maps, databases, animations, project materials, as well as weather data tips.
  • Covers the standard theoretical principles of atmospheric dynamics and applies the theory to global real world examples
  • Assumes only non-vector based calculus
  • Features supplementary CD-ROM with electronic versions of all figures, case study data and possible term projects
  • An invaluable text for students of Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Geography and Environmental Science

A Solutions Manual is also available for this textbook on the Instructor Companion Site www.wileyeurope.com/college/lynch

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Applies Atmospheric Dynamics is clear and comprehensive. The application of basic principles to real-world problems and events is well illustrated, and mathematical formulations are clearly presented.... The book would be extremely useful for anyone wanting to gain an understanding of concepts and processes related atmospheric dynamics." (South African Geographical Journal, 2008)

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent supplement if you already have the "good" texts., November 30, 2007

I've used this book in the atmospheric dynamics course that I TA for for two years now. We will not be using it for a third year. This book is meant to make more mathmatical texts "easier" by eliminating the vector calculus and derivations. However, the theory RESIDES in these two things!

My students have often said "this book is missing something, I dont understand where 'x' equation came from." When I pull out Holton, they might not understand immediately but they have the tools to go home and work it out. 9 times out of 10 they come back with an "aha!"

Instead of dumbing down the science, we should become better equipped to teach it the way that Holton and Hess would appreciate. If you are going to purchase this book, I suggest also having Holton in your library. You arent going to learn dynamics with just Lynch and Cassano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fills a needed gap in meteorology texts, September 16, 2007
By
Howard Drossman (Colorado Springs, CO USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book fills a gap between the more mathematical texts on meteorology pitched at the level of physics majors (such as Wallace and Hobbs) and the more descriptive texts like Ahrens' Meteorology Today which tend to ignore differential equations altogether. The text introduces the required physics with differential equations needed to understand the atmosphere at a high enough mathematical level that students come to appreciate why equations are necessary as well as the appropriateness of fluid equations. However, it achieves this in a way that is interesting and accessible for advanced students in environmental science by using real-world meteorological examples. While the mathematical level of discourse in the chapters is sophisticated, the end-of-chapter problems are highly accessible even to a student with only one (good) class in calculus. I intend to use more than half the chapters in this text for a senior level atmospheric science class for environmental science majors who have only a limited background in physics and calculus. Wish me luck!
