Book Description

The objective of this book is to explain the important elements of exterior ballistics so shooters can effectively apply the science to achieve greater success on the range or in the field. This book also offers an original contribution to the long range shooting sports: experimentally determined Ballistic Coefficient (BC) data for over 225 long range bullets of all popular brands. With accurately measured BC data, shooters are empowered to make more precise trajectory predictions than were possible prior to this publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every long range shooter needs to read this book. January 15, 2012
So much of long range shooting information is based upon myth and baseless information. Finally someone has written a book that dispels the myths, and applies science in a format a layman can read and understand. On top of that Bryan Litz went one step further than other texts and actually tests 236 longs range bullets using the same methods for all of them. This makes the third section of the book a valuable resource for any long range shooter or reloader because you can objectively compare bullets. (Manufactures differ in their test methods so comparing a bullets BC to another manufacturer isn't always reliable).
I never thought I would say this about a ballistics book, but I couldn't put it down once I started reading it.

If you have ever been interested in learning about the science of long range shooting, this is a great place to start. Even non-geeks will appreciate the information. Litz does an excellent job of taking highly technical information and presenting it in a manner that most folks can understand.

This is one of the finest books on ballistics, and those things that affect the bullet's flight path in long range and extremely long range shooting. Bryan presents potentially confusing formulae and lots of data in a common sense and practical way that is easy to understand, and absolutely critical to your success in long range shooting.

The included data measured by Bryan Litz for common bullets is worth its weight in gold. You will no longer have to wonder if your ballistic solution program is accurate, because your inputs will now be on target.

I highly recommend this book for students of long range shooting.

5.0 out of 5 stars should be REQUIRED READING for shooting distance March 10, 2013
Well written, easy to follow, and EXTREMELY educational. Anyone interested in shooting distance should study this book before they spend a cent on anything else. The software that comes with is simple to use and has been DEAD on. Last I checked it was still available on the applied ballistics page.

This is an excellent book if you want to understand a bullet's flight and become a better shot at long range, like Camp Perry or in F Class matches. It contains a complete course in external ballistics written in plain English. The layman can understand it; there are some equations included but you do not have to be a mathematician to understand his explanations. Bryan includes a disc with a computer program that will do all the calculations for you, so you do not have to be a programmer to use what he teaches either.

What I find most about the book is that it is well laid out. It starts out with a solid introduction and then devotes a well-written explanation of each factor affecting a bullet's flight in its own chapter. Again, the explanations are easily understood, and not just by an engineer or physicist.

To top it off, Bryan includes actual test data for widely used bullets for long range shooting. This is test data, not data made up to enhance a product's sales. You can use it to help make a better selection of the bullet you need for the shooting you plan to excel at. And, this data is on the disc along with the program.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for anyone aspiring to shoot at long range.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has it's good, has it's bad September 29, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I really want to love this book and it has some really fantastic aspects but it also has some things that really piss me off. First of all, from a bullet flight standpoint it is fantastic, if you want good, useful ballistics info this book has it in spades. Where the book falls flat on it's face is when he dabbles in bullet lethality. What was wonderfully grounded ballistics is hurt by a chapter full of things like the optimal game weight formula and other shooting voodoo. If you completely ignore his notions on lethality and recognize that wound canal destroying tissue is what causes the collapse of vital functions in an animal and untimely death than the book is great. Otherwise the insertion of the ridicules arcane notion that energy is what kills inserted into an otherwise excellent book is something I fined offensive. I wish the editors of such books would stop printing that sort of information that steers each new generation in a completely moronic direction.
