Excellent Choice for the Non-Math Student,
By
This review is from: Applied Calculus (Paperback)
This is a magnificant calculus book. It is aimed at students in business, the social sciences, and the life sciences. This is done by first the examples and problems. But perhaps even more important the wording of the text is such that these students will understand what they are trying to convey and to clearly show them how calculus can be used to solve problems in their particular field.
At the beginning of the book, three pages of the Preface, the applications discussed in the text are listed by: Business and Economics, Life Sciences and Ecology, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences. Under these headings are subjects like: Value of a Car, AIDS, Cancer Rates, Abortion Rate and so on. These are subjects that will have some interest and applicability to students rather than the old traditional problems like water flowing into and out of a bucket that used to be the mainstream of teaching calculus. Finally, calculus marks a transition in the study of mathematics for a student. Up until now he studied arithmetic every year in school, maybe he finally got to a bit of algebra and trig. Now he is exposed to a whole new world of ways to handle problems that go beyond anything he has seen before. This book eases the student into an understanding of how to approach these problems better than any I've seen.

Good Textbook,
This review is from: Applied Calculus (Paperback)
This textbook is good, but not great--unless you have an instructor who will interpret the calculus-based applications and problems in the book. Nonetheless, not bad.

Teach yourself Calculus,
By "albanir-sf" (Manaus-AM-Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Applied Calculus for Business, Life, and Social Sciences (Paperback)
This book is addressed for understanding of the Calculus and not for the traditional teaching that sins for the excess of formalism. It is an excellent book for who wants to understand and to learn Calculus through the application of problems of the Real World. The book also motivates the use of graphic calculators to have a better vision of the problem.

The textbook itself is fine, my comment is not so much about the content as a missing feature in the Kindle version. It would be helpful if the Kindle version included references to the page numbers in the original book. My professor had the hard copy and references the page numbers for examples and assignments instead of sections, and it is difficult to figure out exactly where he is referring. Please include an option allowing the reader to go to specific pages.

False Solutions. Wrong answers.,
This review is from: Applied Calculus (Paperback)
I have found innumerable wrong answers in the back of this calculus book, the answers provided by the counterpart Solutions handbook vary widely from the answers found in the actual textbook. Specifically, check Chapter 3's section "check your understanding." I have found almost every true and false answer (out of 50) to be wrong in the back of the textbook (although the solutions handbook indicates the correct answer.) Anyway, Hughes Hallett needs to get their act together. Poor performance. Don't buy the 4th edition.

I was not at all impressed by this distributer. I am a college student and expected to get my books in time to have for class. They are now nearly 5 days overdue, and I am behind in my classes. My advice to college students looking to buy from this distributer: DON'T.

As a college student, I also have this book available to me online, but it's great having the hard copy, since it's what I am accustomed to.
Overall the book has lots of examples and portrays the material very well.

Good Quality and Fast Service,
This review is from: Applied Calculus (Paperback)
I was a bit skeptical to buy a textbook online at first. However, with my purchase I found my worries to disappear. The Applied Calculus book I bought had an overall good quality with the only complaint being that the corners of the book had been folded or somewhat torn. The delivery was also exceptional. I received my book about 1-2 days after ordering online. So far so good. I can't really find anything wrong to say about my purchase.
