3.0 out of 5 stars Applied Data Communications book review
This book is a required text for a master's class I am taking. The content is very good and germane to the subject of data communications, but is well dated. Both the book and the associated case studies refer to the technology of the early 2000s. While the basics of technology remain the same, the content should be updated given the price of the book.

Mr Goldman's book is very readable and is chock filled with charts, checkoff lists and such that I will use when I get into the IT field. His objective to get the reader to think in terms of applying the material rather than memorizing it. He suceeds. Does he have any other related works out there? I'll buy them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Business Oriented, July 21, 2000
This review is from: Applied Data Communications: A Business-Oriented Approach (Hardcover)
one of the best books in its field, gives details yet doesn't go deeper than what business students would like, its language is easy yet specific and use network jargons. in short, buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, May 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I wouldn't even give a zero to this book, it is simply the worst book I have used and definitely outdated. Just can't understand why would a college use the old book horrible written. Nothing make sense, the back index is horrible - one cannot find what is needed, the definitions, everything is all over the place... Shouldn't even cost a cent...Horrible

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Supplemental Information, November 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was selected as a part of my graduate program at Johns Hopkins University. While the course didn't rely heavily on the book, it was an excellent resource for supplemental information to the class lectures. On numerous occasions I would make notes in class regarding a particular technology or protocol that was listed in the lecture and I could locate the information very easily in the book. You really can't ask for more and I would definitely recommend reading this book and then making a good place on the shelf for further use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, February 8, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Taking into consideration that this is a text book and I've only gotten through the first 3 chapters I find it a very informative, in-depth, and readable book. The information is provided in a manner that the average, non-computer, person can understand and absorb. I am an older adult returning to school after 20 years. It is hard to retain almost anything these days but this text makes it easier than most. I won't say its easy, that is a matter of personal opinion, but easier in the sense that you can read a section and still realize that you understand what it is you just read and that it flowed smoothly from the previous section; incorporating previously stated ideas and information while addressing new ones.

I read the third edition front to back. If the forth edition is anything like the third, you won't be disappointed.
