About the Author

Dr. Ramin Esfandiari is a professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where he has served as a faculty member since 1989. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (Optimal Control), all from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has authored several refereed research papers in high quality engineering and scientific journals such as Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Optimal Control Applications and Methods, and ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics. Dr. Esfandiari is the author of Applied Mathematics for Engineers, fourth edition (Atlantis, 2007), Matrix Analysis and Numerical Methods for Engineers (Atlantis, 2007), and MATLAB Manual for Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Atlantis, 2007). He is one of the select few contributing authors for the latest edition of Mechanical Engineering Handbook (Springer-Verlag, 2007), and the co-author (with Dr. H.V. Vu) of Dynamic Systems: Modeling and Analysis (McGraw-Hill, 1997). Professor Esfandiari is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards including Meritorious Performance and Professional Promise Award, TRW Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship Award, and the Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This text is written for the junior or senior undergraduate or for the graduate student who must take a math course. The book includes:

1) Ordinary Differential Equations

2) Partial Differential Equations and Fourier Analysis

3) Linear Algebra

4) Complex Analysis

5) Probability and Statistics

There are several attractive qualities to this book:

First, the author seems to understand that engineers use math as a tool and he integrates physical phenomena into the problems where this is appropriate.

Second, there are no mathematical proofs in the book. Engineers do not worry about why something works mathematically. Mathematics is a tool used to solve a physical problem. In the words of the electrical engineer Oliver Heaviside when he found out that mathematicians did not approve of his use of new notation to solve differential equations he said "I do not have to know how my digestive system works in order to enjoy a good meal". His answer is entirely appropriate today.

This is not to suggest that the book lacks rigor; rather it is written by an engineering professor who understands what his students need from a math text book. If you are math purist, this book is not for you. If you like worked problems, this book will help you.

Third, you do not need to have a copy of MATHCAD, MATLAB, MAPLE or the like to read this book and get something from it. Many of the other major engineering math texts actively integrated these popular programs into their texts. While this may seem like a good idea, I do not agree with it. In an exam situation, you will not have MATLAB, MAPLE, or MATHCAD to help you solve the problems.
